Draw Up Propofol for Injection

Spiking medications refers to drawing the medication out of the vials. Otherwise, how would you get your medications for anesthesia and surgery?

Depending on the volume to be drawn, and the medication viscosity, we use different types of needles to get the medication out.

Propofol is a little viscous, and we sometimes need a lot of it! That's why we use these large diameter spikes to draw up the medication quickly and with less strain on our fingers!

Being an iv pharmacy tech i agree. I have arthritis in my finger joints of my one hand from drawing up medications. Especially the 60cc syringe.

Exactly why I have marked arthritis in my hands after 35 yrs of nursing. Finger joint replacements started 8 yrs ago.

How cool! I'm a big believer in preventing early arthritis. Probably because it has already started from holding my phone in my left hand and typing in comments! The arthritis is in my left hand joint at the bottom of my thumb.

There is also a bacterial filter to prevent the displacing air from contaminating the multi-dose bottle.

Must be nice working at a place where you have those. I’ve only worked at one hospital out of 6 throughout anesthesiology residency where those were available. What we did was put ~3cc of air in the vial and let the pressure difference help us easily draw up the medication with an 18g needle.

The hardest medication we draw up is Mannitol through a filter needle.

Having drawn up viscous fluids for immunizations for livestock’s without these definitely make for difficulty.

Not only them, as a retired phlebotomist, I have arthritis in my fingers, especially my left hand(dominate hand) and my wrists.

You can also pay greater attention to your line-of-fire hazard, and keep your body parts away from the plane aligned with the disc.

You know... They make those fifty ml BD syringes with a finger loop in the back and a luer lock on the front. I use them all the time for soil vapor sampling. 🤓

The arthritis comes from not connecting through the shoulder blades when you do the movement.

Very interesting. Note that the audio and video are misaligned though, I would suggest fixing that going forward

Now I know what they gave me for rotator cuff surgery. It was so much!!! It also burned like crazy for a moment then I woke up and it was all over.

Looks like a fluid spike. It makes sense to maximise flow rate.

When my anesthesiologist gave me propofol for my colonoscopy it didn’t sting at all but I read a recent post of young man saying he screamed in pain when given propofol. My Dr did not add lidocaine in case you were wondering

Based on my years of cooking, those markings are a dead give-away: these devices are for precise measurements of fluids.
