This sweeping drama, based on real historical events, follows American boyhood friends Rafe McCawley (Ben Affleck) and Danny Walker (Josh Hartnett) as they enter World War II as pilots. Rafe is so eager to take part in the war that he departs to fight in Europe alongside England's Royal Air Force. During that entire exchange the British pilots were thinking "I wish this guy would shut up in my ear.."

As of today, one British pilot who fought in the Battle of Britain is still alive.

0:18 The mechanics are always underrated in these kind of movies. They had to piece the planes together somehow after they were riddled by bullets and had to do it under massive time pressure with only basic tools and always in a way to make the plane resist the forces during an air combat... I'm an aircraft mechanic myself and I always admire these guys, no matter what nation they were serving.

Ben Affleck's character was so irritating that I was actually cheering for the Germans by this point.

The Spitfire. So gorgeous. Those wings. Fuck me what a beautiful aircraft.

Every movie with air combat has to pay homage to the heroes of the Battle of Britain.

Imagine having this guy screaming all over your coms constantly. Trying to focus when someone keeps shouting HAMMER DOWN and I GOT ONE.

Squadron were probably slightly relieved when he hit the water

Why can we not get a modern Battle of Britain movie with this kind of CGI mixed with real planes, this movie is great just for the reason they included the BoB. Imagine this scene but as a whole movie for 1 and a half hours. Would be epic. Oh and more hurricanes please.

Be good if you could edit out Ben Afleck from this scene

Rip to all boys who lost their lives flying spits and hurricanes and especially the guys who had to fly the bombers

Aside from the inaccuracies, the Eagle Squadron doesn't get much time on movies other than this (the other was Eagle Squadron in 1942).

“There goes the siren that warns of the air raid
There comes the sound of the guns sending flak
Out for the scramble, we've got to get airborne
Got to get up for the coming attack
Jump in the cockpit and start up the engines
Remove all the wheel blocks, there's no time to waste
Gathering speed as we head down the runway
Got to get airborne before it's too late
Running (running), scrambling (scrambling), flying (flying)
Rolling (rolling), turning (turning), diving (diving), going in again
Running (running), scrambling (scrambling), flying (flying)
Rolling (rolling), turning (turning), diving (diving)
Run
Live to fly
Fly to live
Do or die
Won't you run?
Live to fly
Fly to live
Aces high
Move in to fire at the mainstream of bombers
Let off a sharp burst and then turn away
Roll over, spin 'round to come in behind them
Move to their blindsides and firing again
Bandits at eight o'clock move in behind us
Ten ME-109s out of the sun
Ascending and turning our spitfires to face them
Heading straight for them, I press down my guns
Rolling (rolling), turning (turning), diving (diving)
Rolling (rolling), turning (turning), diving (diving), going in again
Rolling (rolling), turning (turning), diving (diving)
Rolling (rolling), turning (turning), diving (diving)
Run
Live to fly
Fly to live
Do or die
Won't you run?
Live to fly
Fly to live
Aces high”

The Spitfire is the most beautiful aeroplane ever made and the merlin engine has the best sound of any aeroplane ever made.

Sorry but hitting the water at that speed would tear the plane to shreds and kill him instantly. He would not survive lol. Michael Bay more like Michael Gay.

This movie had great CGI and practical effects that still hold up today. It's just a shame the rest of the movie didn't match up.

I have always loved the scenes after his spitfire gets hit. Purely by its sound design! Just before it hits the water, it wails like a wounded beast.

Can’t believe this movie is 20 years old

Spitfire was the glorybird but the hurricane was the workhorse. Much respect to those polish pilots who fought with our bunch during the battle. They didn’t get the recognition they deserved until long after the victory celebrations. My granddad flew hurricanes from Dunkirk on, later on spits - member of the caterpillar club and goldfish club I think but he had some good chums with the poles. Spitfire is a beautiful aircraft tbf heard it handles like a dream but I’d love to fly a (or in) hurricane for sure
