At a seminal moment in World War II, British Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding (Laurence Olivier) must rally his outnumbered pilots against Hitler's feared Luftwaffe. Besieged by German bombing runs, the Brits counter with an aggressive air campaign of their own. Within months, the Nazis find themselves on the run, thanks to Dowding's tactical genius and the work of talented squadron leaders (Michael Caine, Christopher Plummer) and other brave patriots.

Still love how nonchalant the guy is walking over to ring the air raid siren.

As with “Dunkirk” they had to use RC models of JU-87s. Lucky they didn’t use that weird looking Percival Proctor that looked like a JU-87.

They were going to restore the IWM's Stuka for this movie, and got it to flying condition. Then someone realized it was one of only two Stukas intact in the world at the time, and if it crashed...so they decided to go the RC route instead. It worked pretty well.

Battle of Britain is a serious film, in spite of its faults and aging this is a beautifully designed and executed account of the most perilous and frightening episode of British history. Also, George Lucas was watching, gripped. No Battle of Britain, no Star Wars.

The Observer Corps played a vital role in the Battle, as seen in 4:46 onward. While radar plotted aircraft nearing the English shores, once they crossed they were visually sighted, with type, altitude and heading given to the appropriate RAF station. No wonder the OC soon became the Royal Observer Corps.

If only the Spanish had some squadrons of Do17, Ju87 and 88's and Me110s available to loan in the 1960s.😅

The Jericho’s Trumpet scream was used in this movie as the JU 87s made their dives. The Luftwaffe pilots usually used this psychological device, attached on the wings, when diving at large troops formations. The Stuka pilots were annoyed at the noise.

I was literally just watching this scene when the notification popped

Who cares if there's noticeable green screen/blue screen/chroma key bits, matte shots, and the Stukas being RC toys via closer inspection... this is still a marvellous sight compared to many CGI-laden flicks nowadays based on the same conflict.

Would appreciate it if traditional animation nowadays would give justice with similar scenes though. We really need more Patlabor 2's, Porco Rossos, and Talespins among others.

I've always loved that line: "This is only the beginning, they won't stop now".

One of the cars getting blown up by Stukas' was owned by my friends father in Dover, the production company purchased it for the movie and after it they wrecked they gave it back to him.
I myself grew up around Hawkinge airfield and played on it as a lad and recall being booted off several times whilst playing there, I had the proud distinction of the most bomb disposal call outs to my local primary school after taking various bits and pieces found at the airfield to my lessons.

Счастье англичан всего лишь в том, что разделял их от Германии пролив Ла - Манш . Быть бы им битыми ужж на первой же неделе вторжения, будь они сопредельным государством .

No you don't get all of those fancy shots but anyone else notice that this film made a long, long time ago looks way better than any scene packed with CGI?

Everything the Pearl Harbor movie from 2001 did, this movie did way better.

Remember earlier form of radar could only accurately identify aircraft over the sea, due ground terrain caused to much clutter.
Over land it was the Observer Corps who took over, and plotted accurately for early warning.
That’s why in early 1941 they were given the title ROYAL Observer Corps.
They were not officially stood down as an organisation till 1991.
Part time heroes who has been forgotten about by the majority.

The Stukas were no match for Spitfires and Hurricanes. The RAF had no trouble downing them.

Notice how at 4:53 they've started taping the windows to reduce flying glass in case of an attack. The attention to details in this movie is really amazing.
