Tatting for Beginners - A Very Simple Edging

Here is another video for beginners. It's a very simple edging that is easy to remember and quick to execute. I was particularly careful to work more slowly as I sometimes have comments that I tat too fast (even in my beginners' videos) so I hope this video is better. You just need one shuttle and a ball of thread to make it. The sample I am making is tatted in size 20 Lizbeth thread.

The written pattern is as follows:
R3-3-1---1-3-3 (the 3 centre picots are graduated, one short, one long and one short), rw
*C3-3, rw
R3+3-1---1-3-3, rw
Repeat from *
For the corner, after a ring, omit the chain and make a second ring joined to the first at the first picot, reverse work and continue from *

Or, if you're a complete beginner and not used to tatting pattern terminology:
Make a ring of 3 stitches, 1 picot, 3 stitches, 1 picot, 1 stitch, 1 longer picot, 1 stitch, 1 picot, 3 stitches, 1 picot, 3 stitches, close the ring, reverse work.
*Make a chain of 3 stitches, 1 picot, 3 stitches, reverse work.
Make a ring of 3 stitches, join to last picot of previous ring, 3 stitches, 1 picot, 1 stitch, 1 longer picot, 1 stitch, 1 picot, 3 stitches, 1 picot, 3 stitches, close the ring, reverse work.
Repeat from *

I have been trying to learn shuttle tatting for over 20 years. I never got the hang of it until I watched your videos. I gave up trying for so long because I never thought I'd manage it. Thank you so much for helping me learn this beautiful craft!!! I'm working on this edging right now. It isn't perfect, but it's mine, made from my own two hands!!!

This is the perfect pattern and video to share with my 3 young grand daughter tatters. You've taught me so many aspects of tatting... and I'm passing it on to the next generation.
Enjoy the birds in the garden, would love to sit and tat in such a setting.

Thank you so much, you are an excellent teacher! When I was a student nurse ( back in the days of matrons, starched caps and aprons!) a fellow student taught me how to tat, and I took to it easily. Recently, 46 years later, I came across the shuttle she gave me, but couldn’t remember how to tat. Having seen other tutorials I just couldn’t get the hang of it .... until I found you ! Thank you again, I could watch and listen to you all day 🙂

Aha, I was reversing my work by turning it right to left, left to right, not up to down, down to up. No wonder things weren't coming out flat! Very clear indeed, a nice speed for beginners like me, thank you!

❤💜💙I just started a couple nights ago needle tatting! ( can’t wait to start learning with shuttle, too!) I love this design so much and the time you take helping us, that I was determined to learn this pattern on a needle while I was waiting for my shuttle items package to come through that I ordered this morning! I did it! It’s rough, but all the stitches and picots are there. I also noticed how much better it looks as I go along! It’s so beautiful! I’m enjoying it immensely! Thank you!

I made this as a edging for a handkerchief for my Mom this Christmas. The elements are nice and small and the pattern simple to remember. It was just perfect for me to work on during lunch breaks and while on the bus. She was so pleased with it! Thanks so much for sharing!

Thank you for this tutorial. It’s been a couple of years since I picked up my thread and shuttle. This is just what I needed to get back in the groove

Thank you for slowing this down. I finally understand what is happening! I started tatting this week, but went with needle tatting because it made more sense. Now I understand the shuttle tatting, and will have to try that.

Thank you so much for all of these tutorial for beginners, I just found out about tatting about a week ago and start to learn it from your videos. It's very helpful. I still try to find the correct threads to work with though, because my hand are still stiff, and I'm using a cheap shuttle, but I'm really enjoying the learning process. Once again, thank you

Thanks, as always very useful! Tutorial. I love the way you explain the steps, and I am very grateful to you for sharing your knowledge. It is difficult to find someone who teaches the art of tatting, with a shuttle. And continue doing tutorials. Thank you.

I used to do a lot of tatting when I was a young girl, i.e. 40 years ago. Due to covid-19, I'd like to start doing it again. Thank you for this excellent tutorial, it's really refreshing and very helpful. Thanks again.

This pattern is, indeed, very effective and pretty! I love shuttle and ball method.
Yes, I hear the lovely birds...wonderful. Better than honking cars.
The speed is perfect! Excellent!
Very helpful and an easy pattern to carry everywhere I go to give me something to do.
I would love to see how you join at the end of a round. Either to finish the pattern or move to the next row.
Thank you for this!

I'm super excited to make this, this is exactly the kind of pattern I have been looking for in order to strengthen my basic knowledge and actually produce something tangible. 💖
