Religious instinct. This phrase is fascinating (especially in contrast to the observation of Jung on secular ideology (the propensity nowadays to ‘embrace’ spirituality in contradistinction to religion)). For me, it reminds me of the difference between on the one hand living a good life (which one could argue has its origin in the religious instinct) and on the other adopting a life style, implying that life can be styled as long as we follow the recommendations of science. One defines social cohesion based on aspiring to lead a good life higher than a concern for just individual self while the other is defined by a faith in science.

This reminds me of the Canadian philosopher George Grant. His book "Technology and Empire" is a deep exploration of modernity and the impact of technology on man.
