Here’s why the OnePlus Open is the most surprising new foldable of 2023

This week OnePlus announced its first-ever foldable phone the OnePlus Open. And while it shares a number of similarities with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5, it also brings a lot of new twists to the category. Thanks to its sleeker design, big cameras and the company’s innovative approach to multitasking. And while it’s still pretty expensive at $1700, OnePlus is offering a surprising deal that will knock $200 off its price with the trade-in of any phone, regardless of its conditions.

Correction at 2:57. Both the Pixel Fold and Z Fold 5 are IPX8 and not IP68 rating. Neither has a dust rating

Still don't understand everyone's obsession with wireless charging. I rarely use it on my iPhone let alone any other device I own

One+ website offering up to $1200 off $1699 sale price. Trade in required. There is a check box to obtain discounts. $200 is instant discount for everyone. $1000 appears to be trade in value for your present phone. I thought the website confusing to be honest. Pair of ear buds are free to everyone who pre-orders the phone. It's a no brainer.

Holy!... That's the first time I've seen the camera bump at that angle and that thing is HUGE!

I've seen several review for this phone, where many are showing mostly only the pros & spotless reviews. I like your review because it show both spectrums of pros and cons; so far I only saw a small number reviewer that does this. Regardless that overall could be more on the pros, it is good to hear complete set of information. Thanks for being informative on the subject.

The pixel doesn't stop at 178. So tired of hearing that crap. It open all the way just fine. Did that the first few hours maybe. It opens flat. Period. This phone looks awesome but even better the software looks miles better than my pixel fold. Oneplus right now will give me 1299 for my iPhone 14 Pro Max trading. I can get the fold for $579 and they are throwing in a pair of wireless headphones. That's a fantastic deal.

Personally for the night mode feature, i much prefer Oneplus' approach than many others. It looks just how it should look like during night time, preserving the look of the night rather than trying to brighten every single shadow and dark spot in the picture. In the samsung photo, back then its superb, but as many competitors are experimenting with their own approach, i like it less now. Its too processed and artificial with the blueish hazy center, overexposed light sources, as far as I can see. Noise and sharpness those ones I can't really tell for now i think i need to see them in front of me then I can provide an opinion. But looking at the photo overall, the Oneplus night picture is more well balanced and much more pleasing to the eye as they preserved the night look, while samsung is just trying too hard i think.

Pixel's photos come close, but i may need more pics to compare.

one plus is the best of the 3 at the moment i love the natral photos ... looses on the night photos to the z-fold. camera bump is big but i dont care about that . not a fan of time gated softwae updates ( only get updates for 2 years ) thats gotta go for a 1.700 dollar device

The only negative point is repairs. I'm from Portugal, we don't have OnePlus here and the closest authorized repairer is in Spain. Since it is impossible to open the smartphone without having to damage the carbon part that supports the internal screen, having an authorized repair is mandatory, at least in my opinion

Damn, now China is having all the good stuff... This and the Honor Magic v2. We're really closing ourselves to China.

funny that you mentioned pixel fold, because I did went to 2 different stores, including a Samsung store to test fold 6. I have a Note 8 that is 7 y.o. and I want to upgrade. To my surprise and amusement of everyone around me, Fold 6 does slightly worse picture then Note 8 on the main camera. Same lighting, same distance, same everything. I even cleaned the lens on fold. 7 years of development and 2000Euro in price just to downgrade? Some in dept test put one plus open camera very close to iphone 15 pro max, and you say is about the same as the fold. something does not add up here.

Wireless charging isnt thay big a deal..this phone charges insanely fast has good battery olus wireless charging creates lots of heat, is super slow and you cant really use it while charging

Wireless charging is honestly pointless. I've never used it, and its really just inconvenient and slower.

I feel like wireless charging is just something tech reviewers like, and real world users dont care.

Havent finished it yet but i can already smell the wireless charging gripe.

How desired is wireless charging? Be curious how may users would rank it as a must have feature and of those, how many honestly only use wireless charging daily. The SuperVOC (etc) rates are so much better and often seem to result in less heat in the device when charging.

I don’t use wireless charging because causes the phone to get hot and it seems to degrade the battery. I like oneplus’s decision to omit it. Being lighter and thinner is worth it.

it's the real flagship killer. consider how expansive the flagship price now. if I'm paying 1200usd for a iphone 15 pro max, may as well pay 300 more for the Oneplus Open. or actually in my region (asia) Oppo will be selling at similar price as ip15pro max.

as the wireless charge thing, I think it's a outdated technology and cutting it is the right practical choice. When 25W is considered "fast" charging, when 3500mAh is considered "large" battery, 10w or 20w wireless charging are a thing. I think Xiaomi/Huawei have developed a super fast 50w wireless charging and the charger need cooling with fan. That's exactly how stupid wireless charging become stupid or impractical.

I couldn't care less about wireless charging! Never use it anyways on any phone. Would like super fast charging and I get that.
