The last time I saw an app made by an ex Google employee, they made an app called Candid. Although advertised as a "free speech" app, it was used to train an AI tool to further censor specific Youtubers that they had promote it and eventually sold the AI to other corporate entities. When I see something like this being developed by an ex Google employee, I get super suspicious and start to question what motives they had for doing this.

in principle I believe paying for stuff you want is a good alternative to being the product, but if all my searches would be tied to my real-world payment info, it seems harder for it to be private, and the "we don't track you" promises are _only_ promises, they can't actually be enforced. It's like when VPNs claim to be zero-log.

I think what we really need is an engine that filters out bots and SEO honeypots. So much of the content online is fake, and I don't mean in the fake news sense, I mean as in non-human, automated spam, you saw twitter doesn't even know how much of their content is bots. A search engine needs to find out what real people are actually doing and show those results.

I've been a long time watcher and I absolutely love everything you do; from teaching us folks to repair things, providing unbiased information to advocating for consumer rights. You're an amazing person and you've inspired me a lot to take actions about consumer rights in my own country. I don't think much will happen with just my efforts because i live in an absurdly corrupt place BUT I'm still gonna try my best to advocate and raise awareness because not trying will guarantee 100% chance of failure while trying with just 1% chance of success is still better than 100% chance of failure!

What could happen here however, and this really bothers me, is that there'll be even more of a class divide online: People who can afford to budget an additional $10/mo get privacy, and people who can't get screwed over same as or more than ever. That said, I don't know what the solution is, especially in a country where you can't legislate and regulate in the public interest.

give it a couple years and google will be so unusable even duck duck go will seem amazing. There are so few actual, useful results, and so many sponsored spots that are worthless. Even youtube now doesn't give you the results for your searches, they give 5 results and then go right back to random "suggested" videos. Drives me mad

My friend brought up a good point: if you pay for it, your queries can be directly linked to you unless you're 100% sure nothing is stored. Assuming you pay with a credit card like any other subscription service, you'll need an account, so it won't be anonymous. I could see if they accept crypto though

I really hope this works out … but I think that privacy at the end user end is a better solution. Paying for software that allows the use of existing free sites but spoofs Google so bad that their data on you becomes so garbled as to be useful.

Never forget, "Don't be evil" is so antithetical to Google's mission, they made sure to not include it in their mission statement.
