He was so proud 🥺

Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

His hesitation at "are you proud of me?", and at the same time, Jimmy's hopeful, almost desperate tone as he asks... it's heartbreaking.

Michael McKean showed Chucks emotions really well. It did not make any sense to him how Jimmy could pass the bar. It's so sad because Jimmy sincerely wanted to learn from his brother, but Chuck did everything in his power to kick him back down.

The subtle Chunk glances are so well done and really show the disdain Chuck has towards Jimmy's lawyer degree. And you can really tell Jimmy really wants Chuck's approval. It's so heart-wrenching watching all their other scenes together.

Probably one of the best cold opens of the whole series. It outlines everything about the Jimmy/Chuck/Howard dynamic

Heartbreaking how it was always Howard who saw Jimmy’s “drive”, as Chuck described it, and his “get up and go”. Howard always thought highly of Jimmy, but Chuck made him the villain and made Jimmy think it was Howard who consistently screwed him over. Chuck deserved what happened to Howard at Jimmy and Kim’s hands; not Howard himself.

3:25 Howard called him Charlie Hustle here too, how interesting, a small hint that Howard still liked Jimmy and he wasn’t the one who blocked him!

Two brilliantly written, acted, and filmed scenes that foreshadowed so much.
It was sad to see the series end.

Chuck asked the same question to Howard when he heard Jimmy got hired by Davis & Main. "As what?...oh as a lawyer."

This hits sooo different when you rewatch the scene.

Everyone loves Jimmy...except his own brother

I already wrote on here but I think it was Cruel of Howard to say “let’s reassess in 6 months” like as if Jimmy is seriously gonna wait 6 months working tirelessly just for them to say no to him again.

Hell we already see that it’s been over a year (almost 2) and even brings them a sure fire case that is winnable and they still say no to him.

It’s no wonder why Jimmy harbored that much resentment against them and every other law firm. I’ll use a quote he says to Christie “they’ll smile at you and pat you on the back, but they are never, ever letting you in!”

Side note: I know Chuck was behind it, but still Howard made his choice to follow Chuck and push down the little guy.

I feel like this scene is more nuianced than just "Chuck hates that Jimmy passed the bar." Chuck seems like he's trying to objectively see it as an accomplishment for Jimmy and focus only on how much work it would have taken for Jimmy to achieve this, but still can't bring himself to see Jimmy as a "real lawyer." Chuck is still two-faced and looks down on Jimmy, but I think it makes the scene even more tragic because Chuck is trying to an extent to be proud of his brother but his own pride and feelings of superiority get in his way.

It's clear as day that Chuck did not like the news of Jimmy becoming a lawyer

Kim was so happy for Jimmy, she was the only one who knew and supported Jimmy through his Law schooling while working hard every single day.

Yet chuck saw Jimmy’s Letter and immediately thought he skimmed through it like it was nothing. Jimmy being a lawyer in his eyes was A mockery to his entire profession, and there was no way in hell Chuck would ever support it even if Jimmy were to tell him what he was doing.

Also given to how Chuck is kind of distant I think he and his wife divorced, or at least were in the process of the divorce which is making Chuck more and more unhinged.

Love how Chuck uses the tape recorder that he later uses to get Jimmy’s confession in season 2. These small details go a long way.

Howard's the type of guy to see a slice of cake and say "Don't mind if I do!"

If Chuck had been able to let his ego not control him and actually be proud of his brother after he worked so hard to be a person he could be proud of, the entirety of Better Call Saul wouldn't have happened. And Breaking Bad would've ended far quicker. So many massive crimelords making massive moves and it all might've been changed if one Brother loved another.

Howard: You want the door open or closed?
Jimmy: Uh, closed.
Howard: Okay, well Chuck told me to leave it open so I'm going to go ahead and leave it open.
Jimmy: 😐
