When the Twelfth regeneration finally started, he had accepted that it was happening. Tenant was fighting it with every fiber of his being

I always thought that the doctor had a more explosive regeneration when he had held off the regeneration for a while, like the energy had been pent up and came out in a massive burst.

The 10th didn't want to go even at the end. The 12th was originally resistant but didn't resist as hard at the end. He had accepted the end. However I believe that both had held off the regeneration for longer than they were supposed to. As such the force had built up. Since the 12th wasn't fighting his regeneration at the end he didn't have as much resistance to the energy and was therefore less explosive.
If you hold a hose closed while the water is running, it builds up pressure. If you have that pressure build up too much it bursts forth by shattering the hose. 10th.
If however you suddenly release the blockage the presssure still shoots the water out explosivly yet it's directed out the end of the hose. 12th.

13: Time to regenerate.
TARDIS: No! You go outside! I’m sick of blowing up!

I always thought it was because he held it off so long by visiting all his friends one last time.. it is revealed in The Sarah Jane Adventures to Jo Grant that she even went to see her as well..
It must have been like a pressure cooker and hence the massive explosion..

I thought it was because he soaked up all the radiation in the box when he saved Donna's grandfather.

Theories I have come across

1# 10 was fighting it real hard
2# He had to expel all the radiation incurred by saving wilf
3# Some sort of corruption went on in the creation of the metacrisis doctor meaning his actual regeneration was really violent
4# Regenerations are kind of random and vary in their intensity / effects / process (see classic era regens)
5# As a timelord uses up more bodies, their regenerations become more and more violent (as 10 to 11 was technically the last regen of the doctors original regen cycle, ignoring timeless children)
6# Moffat wanted a new TARDIS set for his era so Davis wrote this in to end of time (probably the real reason lol)

Fun fact: the 10th doctor's regeneration wasn't just damaging the tardis, but the pyro technics actually damaged the set itself. They had to build a new one for the Day of the Doctor

One of the official books actually states that regenerating inside a tardis creates an energy buildup that’s harmless at first like in the classic era but by the modern era the energy release became so intense that it would destroy the tardis.

The Twelfth Doctors regeneration happened relatively fast, where as the the Tenth Doctor’s regeneration took a while cause he went on his “reward tour” where we got to see the companions from the original RTD era, but he also went to other past companions until finally Rose. Which probably took a while

In 'Heaven Sent' we learn that even when Time Lords are far too injured to regenerate, every cell in their body is still trying to do it. It can take days for them to actually die.

So just imagine Tennant's doctor holding off that regeneration until the last possible moment. "I don't want to go." All of those cells full of regeneration energy waiting to be used. Yeah, no wonder there was a big explosion.

TARDIS be like, "Imma have to work on making blast-proof round things."

The reason was Steven Moffat wanted to change the tardis

Something about this video makes me want to watch the world explode as the Doctor regenerates into Jack Black....

Wow thanks for the very detailed and thorough explanation of why he exploded🙃

I'd say the 12th doctors regeneration was the most explosive and destructive, because it nearly destroyed the entire entity we know as "doctor who"

11 destroyed a Dalek battleship with most of his regeneration

During David's time, I'd say since series 2 episode 0 to the end of series 4. The Fate seemed to draw David and Donna close together.

Donna's first appearance in the Tardis.
Doctor's first meeting with Wilf
Doctor and Donna reunion in Adipose.
The Tardis being parked next to Donna's car
Then finally Wilf finding the Doctor which should be night improbable.

So the fact that the Doctor parked near Donna again was a great callback and shows how dire and important the implications are.

We all know that 11s regeneration was the most explosive. And he was fully open to his regeneration

The 10th doctor was teasing his regen edging it for a while. He was about to bust but it was just a bit of pre-regen splurging into his hand but on his last ep he was edging for so long trying to hold back so much that he couldnt hold it in and busted his regen stuff all over his tardis making a mess

No worries, the 10th Doctor will become the 14th Doctor for a few episodes until the 15th Doctor can show up (Scheduling conflicts with the new Doctor actor). David Tennant will get closure with his Doctor.
