This was finally the moment Arthur realized that being the Joker doesn’t just hurt the people he hates, but he ends up hurting those he cares about too.
They should’ve emphasized on that being the reason he renounces the Joker.

Gary actually really liked Arthur despite his flaws and would have been there for him if he had just reached out, but since Arthur did what he did in front of Gary it destroyed any faith Gary had in others. Regardless of people being genuinely nice to him, Gary probably cant make friends now because he knows even what the nicest of people are capable of and he can’t do anything to stop it.

Arthur breaks his joker persona in this scene, hearing his voice trembled and can't look gary in the eyes, he abandons his "ruthless cold blooded killer" front he's been putting on and feels genuinely bad for what he did to gary, it was the first scene i knew there wasn't two personalities inside arthur, fantastic scene ! For Arthur wouldn't be thinking of the ones he hurt, putting it Infront of him and showing him has a profound effect on him, he felt genuine guilt, empathy, remorse, regret all the things that someone who isn't a psychopath feels, showed us he wished he could be JOKER but having a heart and caring is not something that comes with that title. 😅✌️

Joker shows us the many ways people can look at you, some as a heroe, some as an evil man, some as a friend, you are not the same to everyone, everyone has a difrent point of view about you.

I choose to believe this moment is what made Arthur go on to confess everything later. He didn’t realize how much damage he had caused to his friend until it was put in his face. Gary was a friend to him, and Gary viewed Arthur the same way.

But even more, this scene really humanized Arthur to me. Gary really thought a lot of Arthur, viewed him as a saint who never looked down on anyone. To have witnessed his closest friend commit such an act of violence truly destroyed him. Arthur really was just a good guy in a bad world, in desperate need of help.

The pure powerlessness in that scene when he was scratching at that door to get out that apartment I couldn't imagine how small he felt
