How long does it take to charge an electric car? You'd think asking this simple question to electric car owners would invoke a simple reply rather than them trying to avoid answering the question with well it depends... This video looks at why it's so hard to answer the question of how long does an electric car take to charge. We go threw all the variables which will affect the speeds of charging an electric car that even some electric car owners might not be aware of!

I've arrived at the conclusion that some people cannot or simply do not wish to change their thinking. On another thread, one person wrote "I can put £30 in my Corsa and that takes me 232 miles over 5 days and it takes me 5 mins to fill, no EV can do that".
Interpreting that, I take it that's a commute of 47 miles per day. The EV driver experience to achieve the same outcome is "Arrive home, 5 seconds to connect car, 10 if you're slow. Get in car the next morning with the same 232 miles range (or whatever)".
EV drive has "taken" more than 4 mins less to achieve the same outcome, where the outcome is the use of the vehicle for transport.

I think that was rather helpful, Nick. Clarified the thoughts on structuring an answer avoiding 'it depends'. Five factors or variables is a good starting off point. Ta. 👍🙂

Like the stadium analogy. I tell people we average about half an hour at Tesla superchargers or quite a bit longer at most other chargers. Our Tesla X charges at 37-42kw at 50kw chargers no matter the state of charge so we try our best to avoid them on a trip, but will use them as a speedy destination charger if we are going out for a meal or similar on a trip.

A good introduction into charging the only thing I would add to it is set the charge limit to about 80% in the car for the D.C. charge because after that point it will take twice as long to get that extra 20 % and 1 your blocking a rapid charger and 2 your paying a lot for a slow charge. Plus you are adding that extra protection to the battery life. Other than that well explained.

I hope your click-bait headline attracted some people who were hoping to find some negatives about EVs. The simple truth is that if more power is available your car will charge faster. However most people charge their cars overnight at home and therefore the time to charge is almost irrelevant. My car is costing me almost nothing to run because when I'm at home and the sun is shining or it's a bright day. The last 2, 500 miles I've done have cost me under£50 for 'fuel'

"It depends" drives people crazy. But honestly now in a 22kWh Zoe I'm not a good advert for EVs.
"Well it depends but on a 22kW post generally about 40 minutes to get from 20% to 80%"
"How far does that get you?"
"Well that depends on the time of year but 60% of my battery in summer is about 50 miles"
"Wow give me my diesel any day"
"But the thing is mine is quite old and---- oh where did you go?"

But yeah most people are thinking in old terms and not "99% of the time the 3 seconds it takes to plug in and go to bed". They're asking because they want to know how long they're going to stand at a charge station holding the cable and tapping their foot, waiting for a meter to read exactly £20.00 so they can unplug, walk to a little shop and pay.

I really like the stadium analogy, as opposed to the bucket of water analogy. Packing the stadium is much more representative of charging.

3 seconds, then I go in my house and watch TV.

It takes a pee + coffee to charge an EV, unless you have a tesla, then you might struggle to drink the coffee in time

Good video, however its worth pointing out that the slower charging cars are likely older cars with smaller batteries and should be avoided. They are completely unsuitable for driving beyond your local area.

Like the clickbait thumbnail - worked on me! Another excellent video.

15 minutes. Enough for a comfort break and coffee. Usually need to extend charging time to allow for time to get in and out. None of these issues affects me. I have a Tesla.

Rather not sit about in car parks wasting my life away what's so precious waiting for my car to charge as I can see its already taking over people's life's so ill be sticking to petrol and diesel for as long as I can
Why the hell would you want to charge your car every night I just go to the fuel station once a week
20pound gets me 140mile in a diesel van and takes like 4minutes to fuel up job done and then I've got time for the things I want to do in my life instead of sat about at Morrisons waiting for my car to charge
There perfect for someone with no hobbies and then you can let the charging your car over take your life
But thanks for the video any way

How long to charge, how long is a piece of string !. I don’t know how long my iPad takes either or my iPods or anything else really. I guess if you are in a rush get a car with a really long range so less down time. Once all EV’s have a 500+ mile range charging will become irrelevant as their range will be comparable to ICE cars and no-one knows how long it takes to fill one of those either, too many variables, price of petrol, length of the queue to fill, distance from your home the weather the list is endless

As long as you get enough charge till to do your journey

Long charging and more expensive then (diesel) fuel for same mileage

My favourite reason is because a phev range rover is plugged in to the 150 kw charger

Don't worry, I'll wait 😂
