Cramps and spotting in a woman who has a Copper T is common in the first 2 – 3 months and this is common mainly because of a minimal inflammatory reaction that occurs in the Copper T and these reactions usually subside without any treatment in 2 – 3 months. These cramps cloud be because of a misplaced Copper T, that is the Copper T is slipping down in to the lower uterine cavity or the cervical canal and this is causing the spotting and cramps. So is ideally one month after the insertion of the Copper T ,the gynecologist has to call the patient after 1 month and reassure her regarding the position of the Copper T. Sometimes these cramps can be an indication of an infection where there is a white discharge, a foul smelling discharge and itching and it has to be treated with a course of antibiotics. Sometimes the spotting and cramps could be related to Copper T which has perforated through the lower segment of the uterine scar and enter into the abdominal cavity and a scan and an x-ray has to be done if such a situation is anticipated.
