It does not increase the volume, it lowers bass and boosts mid, and highs. If you want more loudness from your headphones try foam ear-tips. (Just get the orange M3 Earplugs and cut them in the half or so, and pick a hole nicely, put on your earbuds. I did so, it’s great.

Late night simply reduces bass and increases mids and highs. This is very, very apparent when listening to a quality sound system like Bluetoothed to a car stereo. So it's not really "louder" in it's total dynamic range.
