I recently experienced this. When I had my kitchen remodeled, I went through everything. There was glassware that I no longer used because of the cloudiness. After trying to clean it without success, I got rid of them. My new policy is washing fine glassware & dishes by hand to prevent this in the future. Thanks for sharing!

Great tips and information especially at the end regarding the high temp permanently etching the glass. Thanks!

Have you tried Efferdent tablets (the denture cleaning tablets)? I sell antiques and SWEAR by using Efferdent to get cloudiness out of any clear glass and marks off dishware, stoneware, coffee mugs, etc. Sometimes the tablets work in an hour, sometimes I let them soak overnight.

Before you give up on cleaning your cloudy glassware try an aluminium 'brighter' chemical like Alubrite undiluted with very fine steel wool rubbing very softly. It should etch the calcium cloudiness in seconds.

You are right when you say your glass may be permanently etched but your reasons are not correct. Glass can take incredibly high temperatures without any issues. The problem is that the phosphates and other harsh chemicals in some dishwashers will etch glass. This causes permanent cloudiness. It can be removed by buffing with cerum oxide. I’ve done this.

Right in the mid of the pandemic I started washing my glasses by hand, for no reason really. What I noticed is that after a couple of years they are much cleaner looking now. I will try these methods for a final touch even though I tried them in the past with no results.

I'm having this same issue with a wall mirror someone put by the road. It's a nice mirror with an oak frame but i can't get the glass part clean no matter what i try. It looks just like your heat etched glassware. I guess thats why it was thrown away.

There is also one last option for the permanent etching you speak of. It's called CRL, not to be confused with CLR. It is, however, a product that you'll need gloves and eyewear for.

OR - try the low temp on the dishwasher to prevent damage? I think I'll try the low temp. Maybe would help the plastic damage as well.

Do you have any tips for glass bottles? I have very hard water and even when I get the stains off with vinegar as soon as the bottle dries they turn right up again cause I can’t towel dry the inside. I guess I could use the pure vinegar soak every time but that’s very impractical since I use the bottle a lot.

Same issue with cloudiness and can see like a rainbow looking film on all our glassware from the chemicals in name brand dishwasher pods plus mixed with the heat I suppose…?

Switched name brand dishwasher pods to a more natural option (chemicals you can actually read and pronounce) and started pouring vinegar in with the pods.
Doesn’t fix old etching and stains from the already damaged glassware obviously, but haven’t noticed it yet on the new glass after 2 months with little noticeable difference, but thinking maybe we need to go old school and throw the dishwasher out 😂

We already don’t put pots and pans or our plastic lids for Pyrex glass containers. Guess the glass can’t go in either because our dishwasher doesn’t have low heat setting. Uggg

Here is what You would have to do, after getting new glassware!
If You use your dishwasher, do not use high drying cycle, and do not open the door until Your glasswares reach a warm but not hot temperature inside. I figured this out on my own, when my smoke brown glassware got fogged. They looked so unpleasant, I had to replace all. I know what happened, we opened our dishwasher door soon as the cycle ended, the way lower air from outside burned on the surface.
Now, many many years, I only open my dishwasher, when cool enough to my hand touch.
I place everything in to my dishwasher, even the most delicate water glass. All looks beautiful and clear.

So this is why my glass coffee pot simply won't get clean! Thanks for the assist, Mrs. Abbott.

Wow thanks for your thorough research on this. Dishwashers and the cleaning agents they use may have some additional nefarious effects. One step forward, two steps backward. 😑
