Daniel Brophy was an extraordinary chef who dedicated his life to his craft, teaching at a culinary school in a tranquil suburb of Portland, Oregon. His passion for cooking extended beyond the classroom, as he raised chickens and turkeys in his backyard and grew his own vegetables to create unique, gourmet dishes. Brophy's love for food and his commitment to sharing his knowledge with others made him a beloved figure in the community.

Tragically, on June 2, 2018, Daniel Brophy's life was cut short when he was brutally gunned down in the kitchen of the Oregon Culinary Institute, one of the places where he felt most at home. The shocking murder left the culinary world and the Portland community reeling, as they struggled to come to terms with the loss of such a talented and beloved chef. As the investigation into Brophy's death unfolded, suspicion fell on his wife, romance novelist Nancy Crampton Brophy, who had written an essay titled "How to Murder Your Husband" years earlier. Despite her claims of innocence, evidence mounted against her, including surveillance footage, gun purchases, and inconsistencies in her alibi. In May 2022, nearly four years after Daniel Brophy's murder, Nancy Crampton Brophy was found guilty of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon, bringing a measure of justice to the chef's family and friends. This episode of "Prime Crime with Jesse Weber" delves into the shocking details of the case, exploring the events leading up to Daniel Brophy's untimely death and the investigation that ultimately brought his killer to justice.

Chef Brophy was so kind, a brilliant teacher and he pushed me to ask questions.
To taste everything, work harder and challenged me to succeed.

He was an encyclopedia of knowledge. He loved his students, his rooftop gardens and his chickens were his favorite people.
He was my greatest culinary teacher, being in his class was such a gift of his knowledge.
To say he is greatly missed, just doesn't seem to be enough.

RIP, a one of a kind Chef.

What's even more heartbreaking for me is the fact that Chef Brophy's students show more compassion, grief, and love for him than his own wife. These people are not even family members and yet his death wrecked them. It goes to show how truly evil Nancy is.

That woman is so guilty. She’s a 100% narcissist.

She didn't deserve to be married to that man. And through her greed, she took his life and stole him from those who cared about him most.

The fact that she was laughing about him having a bad week after she murdered him is wild. Glad nobody fell for the sweet old lady gimmick.

The footage of him teaching makes it even sadder 😢 He was so enthusiastic, putting of a cut of beef suit to help his students understand is above and beyond

One of his students said his eyes looked heartbroken and they were heartbroken because he saw who did this to him 😢

She’s laughing in that interview says it all. Just pure evil.
She did what she did out of greed.
Any wife would be lucky to have this kind man.

“I had the right to remain silent but not the ability.” This woman talked herself into a murder conviction because she thought she was smarter than everyone else. She is a classic narcissist.

She really called the police for a letter so that she could claim life insurance? That is insane.

She planned it for awhile, she should have received first degree!

The wife is the very definition of 'narcissism': she did the unthinkable to get what SHE wanted. I went to culinary school where Chef Brophy was a teacher so this feels very close. RIP chef, you are missed.
Btw she is a horrible 'writer'.

Her “books” are so, so, bad. Like, people could be forced to read them as punishment.

A raging narcissist! Just watch her testify. She’s about as narcissistic as it gets. I’d look into her history more. She’s so unhinged, I’m certain this isn’t the first time she’s harmed, or killed even.

This was the first whole trial I watched. The impact the loss of a person has is always big, but hearing all the people that were impacted at the scene itself and all the people that have lost a dear friend and good teacher hit me so hard.

Good to know she got a life sentence and will not be eligible for parole until 25 years... warms my heart.

How does a pizza joint have more security than a culinary school…
