Welcome Extra Historians to Lies, where we talk about the mistakes we made and the details we couldn't quite squeeze into the episode proper. Why did the French offer so much help to the traditionalists? The relatively in relatively bloodless is doing a LOT of work. And most importantly, how does Rob feel about The Last Samurai?

As for transitional armies, I mean, think about how in the 1600s, soldiers were still normally equipped with swords for just about everyone, despite their muskets, and in 1700, Peter the Great was faced with the pike and shot of the Swedish army. Even in WW1, normal commanders of pretty low rank often had swords and there were successful cavalry charges in WW1 against machine guns of all things.

Japanese-Hawaiian Alliance?
Pearl Harbor would be very different if it was an Axis base instead of an American one...

FUN THINGS about the title of the movie The Last Samurai that may or may not have been intentional.
In Japanese, there's no proper pluralization form. So you say "1 samurai, " "2 samurai, " etc. So the title "The Last Samurai" can refer to:

1) Tom Cruise's Character.
2) Ken Watanabe's totally-not-saigo character
3) Both of them
4) Totally-not-Saigo's group of rebels.
5) All of the above.
Which is kinda sneaky. But Tom Cruise needs top billing so people immediately think he's the Last Samurai, singular, rather than *a* last samurai.

You could have distilled most of the nuance around Japanese emperor name traditions into one sentence like this: "A new emperor ascended and he would later be known as Emperor Meiji". Then you could happily continue referring to him by the posthumous name without implying that he used that name during his life.

Do Giuseppe Garibaldi. He not only fought for Italian unification, but he also fought in Brazil (for Riograndese Republicans) and Uruguay (for the Colorados).

Also about addressing the Emperor: Japanese people totally call the previous-but-still-living Emperor "Heisei Emperor" right now, and when qualifying which emperor they're talking about if more than one Emperor needs discussion, like "The Heisei Emperor always visited this place, but the Reiwa Emperor doesn't".
Also YOU NEVER TALK ABOUT THE EMPEROR in media unless it's 100% factual (like the whole transition thing last year). Seriously if you ever wonder why you never see or even hear about the emperor in anime or manga, it's because there's a taboo about it.

I lived in Kyoto from 2002-2003 (Exchange student at Ryukoku University) Walking around theses historic sites was always a passion of mine. (along with attempting to meet Japanese women) When "The Last Samurai film came out In Kyoto a least all of the posters put Ken Watanabe first and Tome Cruis as second billing. Also The way I've always viewed that film is that the whole of them were "The Last Samurai" (Japanese does not have plural nouns, so I just assumed it was in reference to all of them.)
Also I know you have to edit your shows for time but a mention of Nakano Takeko, and the women of Aizu would have been a good thing to bring up during the Boshin war segments.

I am really glad you did this series. I did a lot of work on this period of Japanese history as part of my undergrad studies.

It would be interesting to see your take on the Donghak Peasant Movement in Joseon Korea and how that triggered the Sino-Japanese War. So many people focus on the war between China and Japan and ignore the effect of those actions on Korea itself and the background struggle between different factions in Korea.
