The Fall of the Samurai - How Was the End of the Samurais in Japan? - Historical Curiosities

The Samurai warrior class symbolized feudal Japan, valuing loyalty and courage. They fortified internally from 1635 until the Meiji era's 19th-century reforms, which ended Samurai privileges. Saigo Takamori, known as the Last Samurai, led the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877 against these changes, epitomizing Samurai ideals until his death. The rebellion, fueled by discontent over westernization and social reforms, ultimately failed due to traditional combat methods, inadequate weapons, and underestimating government forces. Takamori's defeat marked the Samurai class's end.

You know, while the fall of the samurai and the Meiji Period is fascinating because of how comparatively recent it was and how well it was documented, I still love the stories of early samurai from the mid Heian Period, aka Japan's first golden age. After making a few videos retelling the stories of those first, very early samurai, I've been able to see where the seeds of of samurai virtue sprang from as well as learned the stories that inspired centuries of samurai storytelling. I love getting to the origins of samurai history and culture.

The Samurai rebels didn't favor their traditional weapons. They had to resort to using them because they simply ran out of ammo and gunpowder. They never shied away from the Aquabis.

Way off my guy, saigo had no issues with the peasant class becoming soldiers (that's what ashigaru had been for hundreds of years, and were always the vast majority of armies in Japan for the entire length of the shogunal period), nor did the samurai of the day have anything against western weaponry (or from the first introduction of them for that matter, imported then later domestically produced firearms and cannons were a huge hit for samurai from the moment the Portuguese first introduced them about 300 years before Saigo).

I mean, what did they expect for defying the Imperial Force. Outnumbered 60 to 1, sword vs gun, there was no way they could win. 'Twas the dawn of destiny, and the age of the warrior came to an end

“The decline of the samurai class was the direct outcome of military reform enacted during the last days of the Tokugawa regime, ” writes Sonoda. With the class went the hierarchical estate system that had propped it up.
