Capt. Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is an American military officer hired by the Emperor of Japan to train the country's first army in the art of modern warfare. As the government attempts to eradicate the ancient Samurai warrior class in preparation for more Westernized and trade-friendly policies, Algren finds himself unexpectedly affected by his encounters with the Samurai, which places him at the center of a struggle between two eras and two worlds.

I love the tiny detail of the soldiers fumbling with the MG equipment, it makes the audience think there might be a chance that they get ridden down before they load the guns properly

I love how the music swells as they break the line of infantry. It gives tension and makes you believe that maybe, if only for a moment, that they have a shot at victory.
But then the guns open up, and that illusion is shattered. They can’t win, and we’re never going to, because this isn’t a fight against Imperial Japan, it’s a fight against time. And time marches ever onwards.

I don’t care what anyone says this scene and the scene following are heartbreaking to watch. It may not be 100 percent historical but this movie shows off the culture and some of the complicated history of Japan going into the new era. I don’t believe this movie counts as a white savior film as many have said. Tom Cruise was just a vessel for the audience to see the culture of the samurai and watch it sadly die. One of my favorite films of all time. I still tear up when I hear “ All of them are perfect”

The instant the machine guns opened fire was almost poetic. Everything was so triumphant, and suddenly they are being slaughtered. A thousand years of tradition, wiped out in an instant.

I'm a huge history nerd, and I don't give a flying damn about the liberties some movies take even if it makes it "not historical". It's well made, and it shows what need to be shown, the fact that samurai are willing to fight to their last drop of blood to defend their honor, even against impossible odds, and the movie shows it really well.

One of the best all-time battle scene.

The colonel was so occupied on singling out katsumoto that he didn’t notice he was being singled out himself.

Augirin's powerful counters and stabs, Katsumoto's wild berserk Nitoryu slashing, that stocky OgreBro's judo slams, and Ujiyo's artfully agile slaughtering art... Such magnificent valour... I wept scalding bro tears all over this red shaggy beard of mine. Most sincerely, a former iajutsuka.

There's something unrivalled in this scene. We see a world collapsing in front of us and the birth of a new one. What used to be a force to be reckon with, the might of the samourai and the strength of their principles, fell short in front of machine guns and artillery. Despite a battle already lost, those men do not go down unwillingly, they do not yield to the progress that is burying them. They die as they lived, no matter the world they are in.

This was a good movie. It wasn't historically accurate but to me, it shows the death of the old ways in Japan and the age of their imperial ambitions begins

Rather than enjoying the amazing film, why am I always in tears after seeing this scene. I have to always stop in the middle, can't bear the entire scene

This movie is basically the Boshin War and the Satsuma Rebellion and how they shaped Japan as a nation
