I'm an engineer, and I actually propose why I do this. I believe it's to focus more on the entirety of the problem itself, it's not that you can't do arithmetic, it's because you don't want to waste any of your mental fortitude second guessing if you accidentally made a careless mistake adding, subtracting, diving, or multiplying some simple part of the problem. For me it gives me peace of mind, at least for me personally.but usually when I work on problems as a standalone and they're not being applied or used for anything than I don't do this because I'm generally not as tense or over analytical

Log 10 - log 7 ~ 0.15
10 - 7 = Lemme check my calculator.

One of my friends even said that ✓36 is an irrational number 😂😂

If I fail the problem I won't let it be a "16 - 9" 😭

We've reached the point where basic arithmetics become far more confusing than integrations

I'm constantly telling the students I tutor that I'll help them with the integrals and derivatives, but don't ask me to do basic arithmetic without my calculator 🤣

We are dealing so much with high math that we forget the basics.

"I paid for the calculator, so I'm gonna use the calculator!"

That’s literally my students everyday lol. I’m glad they’re getting the concepts tho.

You don't want to miss a mark for a pisky unrelated-to-calculus mistake

I love that it's an integral of linear function too haha, so many extra steps

I wish I was taking Calculus, it looks so fun.

I like how he was able to calculate the squares but not be able to find the difference

So true. Calculus is the study of functions and operations, so big numbers aren’t often used in class.

You can hear his brain shouting "7!!! THE ANSWER IS 7!! " tho

A kid in my class asked me not to clear my calculator afterwards so he could see what I used it for. At the end of the test it had 7*8 and 8*7 on it. He called me an idiot.

arithmetic should have three levels. fluency at the elementary level, the pre algebra level and the precalculus level. the lattice method and long division method should also be required and all squares of numbers 1-100 should be memorized as well as the irrational square roots from 1-10 along with rational.

I had a test in which I put 25 - 9 as being equal to 14 since it was a non calculator. Only one I got wrong lmao

This is now my excuse for why I do so many discrete maths problems for fun. :P

I can see it now...bprp would say 'automatic failing grade, you're not supposed to use any calculators!!' 🤣🤣 (Just kidding!!)

When one little mistake can lead to the whole process being wrong, then my paranoid self is going to be making sure that 3+4=7 no matter what
