Hello, new commenters! I know most people just want to get mad/react emotionally to things, but for those actually interested in the info:
1. “Situational disability” is a term that has existed in software and game development for a long, long time. It pertains to accessibility design - it’s not something ‘normal people’ would or should use, it’s just part of accessibility design ethos (which is very broad). The context in which I brought it up here was explaining broad, different facets of accessibility design and how far-reaching it is.
2. I did not invent the term, but obviously I’m familiar with it because I have worked on accessibility in the games industry. Tbh I think the entire software development industry probably doesn’t take issue with the word “disability” or “disabled” in the way the general public seems to - it’s a very common term in all facets of dev.
3. The ‘child’ example is also commonly used, I didn’t invent that either. It’s in Microsoft’s accessibility design docs, etc.
4. For those who just jumped to conclusions, in this video I literally say “get good”, and note that I don’t think Elden Ring is too hard nor do I think it should be changed. If you’d like to see that part, just watch the video!

I try not to be a hater, but I've honestly found the Elden Ring DLC borderline impossible to beat due to the unfortunate circumstance of me not owning it.

I think labeling scadutree fragments as “optional”, while technically true, set people down this path of not wanting to use them thinking they were like training wheels or “easy mode”(I’ve seen this a lot) when in reality the entire dlc is scaled around you raising your blessing level. You might be able to sludge through for a little bit but when you reach a certain point you’ll be getting one shot by even small enemies and doing poor damage. The blessings were put in place to keep players from power leveling before the dlc and then just stomping through all the content like a boss rush.

I feel like I'm getting whiplash seeing this video after seeing some dude with no arms beat the game with his mouth.

Not all games need to be made for all people.

I can't understand why people seem surprised it's hard. number one: to access the DLC you have to be pretty far in the base game so you know how everything works by the. Number two, there's is shit loads of upgrades weapon arts etc; you can use to make fights easy. Number 3 FromSoftWare notoriously make their DLC hard; go play bloodborne DLC or DS 3's you will get shredded.
There is only one unbeatable boss in these games: the camera.

Like some others said, scadu blessings are "optional" as leveling your character and weapons is "optional".
Its a main feature of the game that comes naturally and I dont think its poorly explained at all, people just want to rush and skip the whole game and then complain its too hard.

Having a kid is not a disability, is a responsibility, also you can pause the game, go to equipment then select help and select menu explanation,
Ps: there is no wrong way to play the game, if you want to play game without or with summons, it's an option

I just feel like this take is so entitled. I'm a dad and a gamer. I love video games. But as a dad, sometimes I have to sacrifice what I play or how much I play when I'm watching my kids. It's my most important if not sole responsibility at this time. Games come second. I don't need people remaking or changing video games for me as a parent. I just play the dang game when I have the time

Never used any accessibility features until i crushed my right hand and lost the index finger from that hand, now i need the accessibility features to play most games, i don’t feel any less of a gamer for needing them

The no summons thing sounds more like a challange. You'd never say someone didn't complete a pokemon game because they didnt do a nuzlocke.

If you're on playstation you can pause by hitting the playstation button and returning to the home menu, I think someone on another video stated you can pause the process via task manager on PC. Another person stated you can activate the menu explanation and pause the game. Alternatively this isn't a hardcore death game that you actually lose progress or items, take the death and attend to your child, I have to set mine down a lot.

If it was an actual Hardcore Death game where you lost a ton of progress, dropped items, or had your character permanently deleted in darksouls I'd see how dying would be undeniably upsetting, but at the end of the day It's just a digital currency that can be easily recovered by sprinting past all the baddies straight to where you died, or by visiting a farming spot and grinding up hundreds of thousands of souls.

I think the drama in all this is the misunderstanding of the jargon "situational disability". I've never heard of this term before.

I disagree slightly, in that the scadutree fragments are "optional" only in the same way that wearing armor or upgrading your weapons is "optional." Technically, you can forgo using them, but it's definitely not intended that you do. Some people are out there running through the whole game at level 1 naked with an un-upgraded club, but 99.9% of players aren't doing that. Using or not using the scadutree fragments is the same thing in my opinion.

So I'm a full-time dad and I am also disabled, here's my take. While I agree having kids can make playing games more problematic, I think it is a mistake to lump that in with being disabled. There are times when kids are sleeping well and you do get some downtime. However, I don't get downtime from being disabled, that is with me for the rest of my life. I do understand the comparison you are making, I just don't think calling people with busy lives (through kids, work etc) disabled is thoughtful to people who do have actual disabilities. thanks for reading 👍

Sticking a fork in a socket? I cant believe the devs of Elden Ring would put your child in danger like that.

Yeah, in summary, get your fragments, take time exploring before beating the bosses, and it's easy. That's all, seriously.

Tree fragments are not accessibility options, they are a progression system much like level ups. Refusing to use a progression system is taking a handicap. If you wish to hobble around and fight stuff doing 1 hp hits, thats on you.

Souls game boss defeated is all that matters. Use your mimic as a distraction, level up to 200 and get all the tree fragments. That was the intention of the design.

As for accessibility settings, go ham on fromsoft. Remapping to different controllers etc making options for less fortunate to allow them to enjoy your game is perfectly acceptable. I personally want all my friends to enjoy every game i like in general. If they need an auto attack with one button press and roll to cancel more power to you.

I went into it with a level 180 character and it feels like day 1 back in Limgrave. That tells me they got it about right for a DLC. I explored almost half the map before facing the lion and got them second attempt (with a summon). There are multiple ways to progress, you don’t have to run straight into the boss fights and get slapped. I’ve said it before, accessibility isn’t about making it easy its about making it possible. For me summons let me finish the game and see everything I’ve paid for.

Here's the rub: not every game is for everyone.

I play Tarkov and my boys do not because they find it too challenging. The point of the game is for it to be difficult! Why can't we all start being okay with not every game being made for every gamer
