As a film buff who grew up watching just as many Hollywood movies as Indian movies, Mohanlal in his prime is one of the most natural actor i have ever seen, a genius infront of the camera. For me he is the crème de la crème, and among the greatest actors ever.

He's probably India's most acclaimed actor. Definitely among the top three in critical acclaim. Pretty much every major Indian actor has cited him among their personal top actors.

His career journey (along with that of his career "rival" Mammootty) is very unique compared to other Indian superstars. He's someone who became a superstar solely because of his incredible acting, rather than through a series of commercially successful masala movies. His acting eventually made him one of the most bankable South Indian actors and as a result, his movies eventually turned into those commercially oriented "mass" films. It's not that those are bad (he brings his own flair to commercial roles), but unlike Mammootty, that's all he does now. I guess it's a bit like the modern trajectory of someone like Robert De Niro, where the guy who did Taxi Driver is now predominantly doing stuff like Dirty Grampa. That's why you can see many rueing the old "Lalettan."

Still at his creative peak, he was among the best actors in the world. Mani Ratnam's Iruvar, Padmarajan's Thoovanathumbikal, Priyadarshan's Chandralekha, and Shaji Karun's Vanaprastham are four completely different movies that show his insane versatility. I think they can give you a small taste of how good the man can be.

So here is the thing about Malayalam cinema, Mohanlal and Mammootty are the Kings, the Godfathers of Malayalam Industry, you guys can also find a similar comp of Mammootty too.

They are like the peak of Malayalam Industry and both are considered GOATs of Indian Cinema.

It's interesting that you have discovered Mammootty first and then Mohanlal later. Mammootty was also In this video. In Malayalam cinema also the fanbase are literally split in two with Mammootty and Mohanlal it's like two big clans or houses, yes there are many fans of young actores too but everyone from Kerala at one point have to choose between Mammootty or Mohanal.
