‘Evil Does Not Exist’: first trailer for Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Venice award-winner

'Evil Does Not Exist' first premiered in Venice where it picked up both the jury and Fipresci prize. Is the last film from Ryusuke Hamaguchi, following his critically acclaimed Oscar-winner 'Drive My Car'.

I saw it last night at a film festival in Boston. Incredible film with an ending that is nothing short of stunning. I loved it. Hamaguchi does it again.

Saw this at the Leeds International Film Festival in November, and it's stayed with me since. So many eco-fables focus on the aftermath and consequences of things. This is a film that explores so much of the space that exists before misfortune, the moments where we are most trusting, ignorant or vulnerable. Like in unspoilt nature, these can be quiet, serene moments, but also these can be the times when preventative action is most urgent to avoid disaster. Ryusuke Hamaguchi manages to capture the reality of different perspectives and relationships with nature, and the dangers such spaces face from us, and the dangers we can face from it when we don't respect it. Not my usual kind of film, many people will feel cheated or deflated by it, but I am now a big fan of Hamaguchi.

Watched this movie just this evening and I fell in love. It invoked such a feeling in that I can't even begin to describe it. And the soundtrack is just amazing! I could listen to it for hours.

Even thought I didn't really understand it, but the ending was my favourite part. I still don't know what really happened, but my theory is that the girl got mistaken for a deer and shot. But it's still a mistery for me why the guy killed the other guy. I also love the fact that the movie ended the way it started, just genius! Please share your theories and if you know the true meaning, please do tell!
