I ended up learning about these through the school of hard knocks at my second job. We wrote services to process orders. Services are built to do one thing really well: Run a block of code continuously until told to stop. So it was very ideal. On the other hand, they wanted to control it from a front end webpage, which didn't work out because no IT guy is going to unblock the ports needed to do that (the ports used to talk to the Service Control Manager can be used by a malicious user to learn all sorts of things about your operating system).

Services are nothing more than programs that do a specific thing.

They can be "complicated" but there is also very dumb Services, so it's not correct to say they are "all super complicated"!
