Please watch: "The Life Of Marius de Romanus (Vampire Chronicles)"
Someone who has divided so many fans opinions for so many years is James Potter. Does the heroic father who’s sacrifice for his family really highlight the man he was? Or was he just an arrogant bully who loved to terrorise those he disliked? (Severus Snape) Is it possible that there was 2 sides to James? Did his upbringing have any effect on his attitude? I’m going to address all of those questions and more in todays video.

You: Grew up with your aunt and uncle who basically hate you.

Your father: Grew up living like a king.

Can you analyse Lupin as well? I think he's such an interesting character and the way he changes after he marries Tonks is so well-written. One thing that I think created a lot of controversy surrounding him was the argument between him and Harry in 12 Grimmauld Place. I suppose he became bored hiding from the ministry, like Sirius, and wanted to get in on the action. Keep up the good work. Can't wait for Riddle: an animated series.

Edit : wow thanks for the heart

I love how James’s personality as a teen was like a plot twist, Jk Rowling is amazing at writing characters

That's the thing with most of JKR's characters. You really can't just point at them and purely say good or evil. They are very nuanced.

So in short form he was a person with his heart in the right place who was flawed and made mistakes ... sounds awfully human to me. lol

No I think James always liked lily and because lily and Snape were so close he got jealous

Both James and Snape were bullies at some point. Also they did great and heroic things for different reasons. Honestly I love James character because he is not perfect and he is an example of the complex characters JK Rowling created so well.

speaking of money, what happened to harry's fortune after he trashed Gringotts and inadvertently killed all those goblins? I doubt the spiteful little bastards were very happy with him, even tho he saved their world. voldy would hardly have left them alone if he hadn't died.

All these people hating on James, but would defend Draco in no matter what.

I think one of the reasons many people have an issue with James Potter is the following: That if you ever are a victim of bullying - You have a very hard time ever thinking of *any* bully as having a single redeeming quality - Them being capable of maturing, growing into more than just the daily provider of torment to ruin your day for their own glee. That the bully that was once, was a phase - Yet one a victim of their phase, enduring it - Will carry mental scars from, and sometimes for life too - These scars being easily triggered to ache once more, by a character, such as James Potter.

James: levitates Snape
Snape: creates a curse that slashes a person basically killing them to use on his enemies (James) while at school.

One of the things I like most about the Harry Potter series is that many of the characters are ‘grey’, neither good bore bad but a blend of both, just like real people. I struggle to empathise with James, he was a horrific bully but one who seemed to be growing and maturing and one of the great tragedies of the story is he didn’t live long enough or with the war have to opportunity to either complete the growing up process or get to the point of acknowledging his wrongdoing or to begin the process of attempting to right some of his wrongs.
I have always loved the way the books are written to give the new generation the opportunity and wisdom to live better lives than the generations before them and show how things could have been for their parents generation in particular. I love the parallels between the marauders plus Lilly, Snape, even Dumbledore and our core three plus Ginny, Luna, Draco and Neville.

He definitely has a duality to him. No doubt he was brilliant and protective of his friends and family, but he also found joy in making Snape miserable

Love how you brought up the fan film made by Broad Strokes, I recently rewatched it, and thought that it was absolutely brilliant. As for James Potter, I believed that he because of his privileged upbringing, it prevented him from being the best person he could possibly be, Harry could have become the same, but because he had been through so much suffering, he became a better person than James.

My thing about this is that we've only seen James Potter in a memory of Snape... Snape the one that truly hates James Potter. I'm not saying he was never an arrogant toerag or anything, because James Potter (or so Lily says) that he really was. Why are so many people quick to defend Snape on this matter? We barely know anything about him and Lily, but we know that Lily had a pure heart and soul. She'd never be in a relationship with someone who's heart was dark. That's what Rowling wanted to... she wanted a child born from fake love (Voldemort) and one from true love (Harry). I do thinkg that Lily might've chosen Snape over James if he decided to drop his fascination for the dark arts. I think that Lily might've fancied Snape? Who knows.... only thing is... Snape chose the Dark Arts and James Potter changed. Snape's one good action doesn't make him a hero. He's a complicated character... James Potter wasn't a saint either, but at least he did alot of selfless things in contrary to Snape.

James: financially supported Remus when he couldn't find a job and became an illegal animals to help him during his transitions, included Peter in his friend group even if he didn't seem like much and literally ADOPTED Sirius when he ran away from home.

Snape: called Lily Evans, his only friend, a mudblood AND joined an organization with the sole purpose of killing people like her.

I also believe that there were two sides to James he was a bully when he was a teen but he grew up, he had a big crush on Lilly and he knew that Snape also had a crush on her too so that's where all that hostility comes from, Snape messed up when he called her a mud blood and that gave James a clear way to Lilly and that crush turned into love and with the love of Lilly he became the man we now see

In book 5, Harry took his stress and anger out on Dudley. And yet he still saved Dudley from the Dementors and carried him home. Sound familiar to James and Snape? Yes, James was bully; but that doesn't mean was bad person and couldn't become better. It just shows JK's characters are all human.
