You need to dig your hole three times as wide as the pot. Trees need shallow surface roots. They don’t grow just straight down. It’s also good to use an air spade to get all the dirt out to spread the roots.

I planted a maple recently and made sure to get the root flare exposed, I probably shook all the soil out of the roots in order to make sure the roots weren’t bound in a circle. I also got rid of a singular girdling root and bent another to a normal position. I made sure to get it in the soil well so the roots weren’t full of air. It’ll probably focus on roots this year and grow more next year. Stay safe and have a great day!

Is it a big problem if you dont loosen the soil attached to the roots?

Hello, I am a dendrology for the province of Ontario Ministry of forestry while I can tell that the root flare has been uncovered, and it appears to be 6 inches deep. The average person listening to this video will not know this because I can see it in the photo, but the gentleman who’s describing the video doesn’t tell the audience about doing that one of the most important things.
