just purchased two lovely smoke trees from Lowe’s — the root crown was buried halfway into the pot! Had to remove 4-5” before locating the all-important root flare. Had I planted per these directions, my trees might’ve had a few good years, but they DEFINITELY would have died long before their time.

I liked that you kept mulch away from the trunk/bark (wish you’d emphasized that). The trees in your Bolingbrook IL store are dead and/or near-dead from being planted too deeply and over-mulched.

Rookie mistake. Failure to identify the root flare, and not planting the tree such that the root flare is at grade level. This tree will not thrive to its potential.
