As a former Navy guy, flight engineer, I have said and will always contest that Naval pilots or Aviators are the best pilots in the world! Flying a mission is one thing, but returning to the boat in the pitch dark in rolling seas with foul weather then put that aircraft down and catching the number 3 wire, well, that's what separates Naval Aviators from all other pilots in the world! Can't tell me any different!

I was a crewman in H-2 Seasprite helicopters for sixteen years. '76-'92. We flew off Knox class frigates. Flight deck perhaps twice the size of a two car garage & driveway. One time landed aboard the USS MIDWAY CV-41 during a WESTPAC, to pick up a Chaplain and fly him to the battle group's small ships for Easter Services.

Two memories of that event:

1. I could not believe how HUGE the flight deck was.
2. How crazy busy, noisy and dangerous the whole damn thing seemed to be.

We were encouraged and motivated by the Flight Boss to remove our little P.O.S. helicopter from HIS flight deck ASAP, which we did with much enthusiasm.


Crazy tiimes. Absolutely will never forget it.

Working on the flight deck is truly one of the most dangerous jobs/places in the world. The only thing more impressive than flight ops on the boat is night flight ops on the boat. Thanks to all now serving, those who have, and those who will in the future. FLY NAVY!!!
