Ok so from the videos that i saw yet, heres a typical pickpocket for you -
wears nice dress to blend among the tourists and locals.
would have a bag/jacket/scarf/some kind of cloth to cover there hands (while pickpocketing).
would not board the train generally they will get down as the train doors are about to close.
check your belongings if you see the person besides you trying to exit the train as the doors close.

The antidote i guess is to keep your belongings in front of you rather than besides or back of you.
Use a bag with zipper or more preferably a zipper lock.
When being mobbed suddenly dont panic just grab onto your belongings.

Why don't they put undercover police on the trains and platforms

Two weeks ago i was in Rome with my husband, my bag with my phone inside it and my jacket were stolen in store with cameras all around. The manager told us we can't let you see the cameras. And the police did nothing !!
After this accident we kept seeing pickpocket everyday we notice them in the station.
I'm really upset that the police they saw them and they let them free do what ever they want.

Try doing that in the Philippines, the people around will mob esp the bystander. I've seen that once or twice, the people suddenly gather together and ganged up on the pick pocket.
