I made a small amount from methanol and sulfamic acid and the smell is absolutely horrifying. It's disgusting with a touch of ammonia. Never do I ever want to work with it again.

It was always a big plot hole for me that Walt didn't just make the stuff from OTC items. Would be a lot less work than robbing a train.

Funny thing is that Ammonium Chloride used to be available OTC as an expectorant. You'll also still find it in a lot of Scandinavian licorice candies (referred to as salmiak), but that would be a lot more difficult to isolate.
