Today I will be making some wintergreen flavoring, aka methyl salicylate, from Aspirin. Then, I will eat it.

It's a very simple and straightforward series of reactions, first you take Aspirin, and you turn it into Aspearin, then Aspearmint, and then you perform a reduction and get mint.

The perfect mint for fresh breath and to alleviate the headache when you have to pay for your date's bill at the end of the night.

Dude... mint-flavored analgesic tablets. Helps relieve your hangover while giving you fresh-smelling breath.

How is this not already a thing?!

Consuming extremely potent mint oils kind of feels like getting punched in the face by a giant altoid. I once drank a small amount of peppermint extract, which although was mostly alcohol, still was peppermint at an extremely high concentration. It was quite the experience.

You should think about getting a black light for your liquid separations. I used a UV light often when trying to show two phases in a reparatory funnel that appeared to be very similar in regular light. I think it would help you show this in the future.

Son: Mom, can I have one of these mints?
Mom: No, honey, those aren't mints, it's aspirin.
Son: But I can turn them into wintergreen oil!

When I was little, my cousin and I picked mint leaves in my grandparent's garden. We tried to squeeze the mint oil out with a bench vise to make gum. Of course, we failed miserably - but we had such a fun time trying. She passed away in 1997 at 20 years old. This was one of my favorite memories of her. I've always wondered how to make mint gum from scratch. Anyway, keep up the good work - I really enjoy the edible chemistry videos and all your videos!

can you try to synthesize menthol next? or maybe extract it from mint plants..

that would be a cool thing to add to this series ;)

Thank you for helping me sleep while making me slightly intrigued

Try synthesizing some more pleasant smelling/tasting esters, ideally less common ones. Maybe 1-octen-3-yl isovalerate? I'd also like to see you synthesize your namesake, Nile Red dye.

Thank you for making these fascinating videos. I'm a chemistry teacher, so I love nerding out on your videos.
