Testing Continuity with a Digital Multimeter

Here’s how you can measure continuity, or the presence of a complete/closed circuit for current flow:

1. Connect the black probe to the common (COM) jack on the multimeter. Plug the red probe into the jack labeled as AC voltage or ohms. It may also be labeled VΩmA, VΩ or V (for voltage).

2. Set your multimeter to the continuity test mode. This setting may have its own spot on the dial or may appear alongside one or more functions, usually resistance (Ω). With the test probes separated, the multimeter’s display may show OL and Ω.

3. Touch the probes to either side of the item you’re testing. Positive and negative doesn’t matter in this situation.

4. The multimeter will produce and audible "beep" if a complete path (continuity) is detected. If the circuit is incomplete/open, the multimeter will not beep.
