As currently an anxious avoidant type, I often found/find myself having a certain respect for the standoff-ish types, once ive sussed out they aren't cold, arrogant, unkind.
I often percieved the arms length approach as a humble quiet confidence. That they didnt need to dominate an interaction

Projection. Everybody's favorite interpretation of a blank screen, especially in a culture where 75% of the population will do ANYTHING to take center stage. If not aspiring to be the center of attention is arrogance, make it a double feature for me, and I'll continue to watch with horror frrom the cheap seats. "Peanuts, popcorn, GET your hotdogs..."

Oh Wow, people tell me they thought I was arrogant before they get to know me as well. Although I stand off in order to "read the room" so to speak.
