Even if Trump put 25% tarifs on European cars, they would still be taxed lower than American made cars are taxed in Germany and other European countries. For example, the sales tax for a car in my home state of Connecticut is 6%. If Trump puts a 25% tarif on a European made car, the total tax would be 31%. That’s 6% sales tax + 25% tarif. An American made car sold in Germany is taxed at 19% sales tax and 10% tarif for a total of 29%. Because €1 is worth $1, 13, the total tax amount for an American made car in Germany is actually 32.77% in U.S. dollars. The real unfair aspect is the sales tax or VAT as they call it in Europe. The tarifs make a much smaller percentage of the overall taxation. This is not parity in terms of taxation and in my opinion really is unfair regardless of your feelings about Trump. Also, the WTO is part of the problem because all this is legal under WTO rules. I hate to say it but when you look at the actuall numbers, Trump is actually in the right on this one. When you see what’s actually going on, it’s no wonder why there’s such a huge trade deficit with the E.U. If we taxed there products at the same rates they are taxing ours, nobody would buy them. Trump is a disgrace and an embarrassment but he’s actually right on this one as much as it pains me to it.

Interesting. The EU fanatic, Leinen, says in this interview that Trump should allow the WTO mechanism to work. Mr Leinen, in the spirit of consistency, how about supporting a WTO-termed BREXIT?

I can't think of one thing that I need from any EU country to survive. They need us more than we need them.

The root of the problem is inequality, and median standard of living is too low in US, China, and EU. Alot of the problem is rooted in fiat, rather than finite, currency IMO. A trade war might help each economy protect its national interest and national security, but I think only the symptom of the problem is being treated, not the problem itself. Andrew Yang proposed a new currency. I would have to learn alot more about it, but maybe it's a good idea. Reguardless, the current Euro dollar and yuan are not succeeding enough, so hopefully something can be done. Also, I see problems as they relate to the left and right insulting each others value systems, Americans insulting social capitalism in Europe, Europeans insulting communism in China, Chinese insulting western style democracy. I see every "side" becoming more protectionist, more isolationist, and seemingly, the sides don't understand each other. In my view, we should try and learn more about each others views rather than insult them. Now more than in the past, we are in a global economy, we should probably understand global viewpoints, but also, as it seems, now more than in the past, people are not trying to learn others viewpoints, simply insult the way of life of another people, and say "my way is best." Well...if anyone's way was "best, " those people would live a higher standard of living. I see standard of living going down in all 3 major economies. So, will we keep isolating, or attempt to learn from others ?
