In today's video, I explain why your interview was perfect but you didn't get the job. Interviewing is tough, and sometimes after an amazing interview, you still don't end up getting a job offer. While this is frustrating, it is also very explainable. In today's video, I share some of the most common reasons, that way you can do something about it.

Believe it or not, interviews are mostly the employer seeing if they like you; it has little to do with how qualified you are for the job. There's truly no science behind it.

Only thing you can do is do your best on the interview and keep applying for jobs after the interview.

Seems like they find excuses not to hire you instead of weighing the pros and cons of hiring you.

Back door references are a scammy way to do business. Some people don’t like the people they work with… in fact most people. Especially if you were promoted.

That's what happened to me. Had a good interview on Monday but still didn't get the job. I chalk it up to them finding someone who had a bit more experience in the niche they were operating in. Oh well!

I went through an initial interview and then immediately was asked to meet the team the next day for an internal position I applied for within my company. A week later they said they went with someone else. My interviews went so perfect there was literally nothing I would go back and change. I am pretty hurt and confused and waiting to hear why.

I need help understanding why I had a great interview with a hiring team member and she LOVED me (she used the words “love” like “I love that you have this background and experience. Your past roles sound exactly like our day-to-day.” And she went on to say “I don’t like ghosting candidates AT ALL! And I’m sure you’ll be one of our top picks so I will let you know asap as I’m meeting with the rest of the hiring managers tomorrow but latest by Monday” (interviewed on Thursday)
I didn’t hear back from her so I sent her an email on Tuesday. A few days pass and she finally responds to my email saying they’ve decided to move forward with other candidates.

Ok I get it, maybe they found better. But why build me up like that? Especially since I’ve been looking for 6 months with absolutely no luck.

Here’s where I’m confused, the next day they posted and sent me a automated text message saying they’re having a hiring event.

So why did they say no?

I don't think backdoor references have any reliability especially with most work places having alot of toxic people but hey to each their own if companies feel that works for them then so be it lol

I remember interviewing and I even said that I didn’t have the experience he was looking for it was all in a different tech space. So I walked away thinking I didn’t get it… I ended up getting the role… funniest thing I ever experienced in an interview

Good perspective! Situation can be far more complex than what we think.

I had 4 rounds of interviews and got rejected.. I was gutted to say the least but good luck to whoever did get the role.

Ben shouldn't back door references be illegal? coworkers might say something bad out of spite. Why aren't they asking the people that I put down and signed giving them permission to talk to them? back door references should absolutely be illegal and companies are shooting themselves in the foot if that is how they determine whether to hire someone.

I believe a back reference was a big factor for me not nailing the job but it's okay

Because someone else had a great interview and is a "better fit".

That's what I got told by a company when I got feedback.

Backdoor references are illegal in California, since 2020 for this and other reasons! As a matter of fact, you can't give a bad reference in the state of California because you can sue the former employer for slander and liable (even if the employer is telling the truth) since it's a form of preventing someone from getting a job and making a living, which is what a bad reference will do to someone that didn't get the job! I know a few labor lawyers out here and they don't play!!

This kind of video about job interviews is an excellent example about why I prefer to work for MYSELF, and be MY OWN BOSS, instead of getting a boss to work for-END of discussion!!!🤨😝

People hire people they like the look of, think they will get on with or know of via recommendation. Nothing to do with talent. What you say is less important than how you say it. A less experienced person who can ‘impress’ and create rapport will be preferable. Just a matter of luck whether you get hired as long as you’ve done the work and put effort in - right person, right time. It’s very subjective. Yeah, you have to prepare well but it’s only 20% of the story. Back references are awful, someone somewhere may just not want you to get the job - spite and envy abound. Even ex colleagues you got along well with who are at the company you are interviewing with can turn on you. I check out LinkedIn employees and contacts of the hiring manager before even applying for a job to reduce the chances of back stabbing. I am looking forward to the day I can retire and escape the absurdity that is called work…

According to what G says below, it seems to me that G went on his or her job interview, with the employer, only to waste his or her time-Need I say MORE???

What if their budget doesn't align with my salary expectation? It's not going to be the 4th reason given that the salary is not discussed before the interview?

Hi - just a question - I thought I heard "Back door References" - but the wording displayed "Bank Door References" - which one is it? Sorry - a bit confused here
