I remember a "Peanuts" comic about Lucy reading to the amazing kid with the toy piano about how his deafness meant he never heard this work performed. (Schroeder?) Lucy continues with the narrative that the diva soprano had to come out to the maestro and turn him around to see the ovation he couldn't hear.
Schroeder sobs and bangs his head on the toy piano.
I was a kid when that came out (I can't even tell you what state I was in) and I didn't get the tragedy of the story until later in life...

An altogether solid and forceful rendition. The orchestra size is ideal; parts play against each other without having to best a sea of strings. The video direction and sound balance are some of the best I've encountered with the Ninth on YouTube. Everyone involved clearly did their homework! Not the most passionate or bombastic Ninth you'll hear, but it really presents the piece in its glory, with clear roots in Haydn's counterpoint (the bassoon counterpoint to the Ode to Joy theme received some video love!) and the exquisite leap to romanticism in full view.
