Because you mentioned dinner and a movie, it made me think of something I stumbled on a few years back. Movie and then dinner is a huge improvement on dinner and then movie. Dinner on first or second dates can be awkward small talk, even if you like the person. Movie first gives you something to talk about at dinner and helps you learn about their personality more effectively than you'll often get with the common small talk questions.
