Okay we've talked about what to wear on a cruise ship, and cruise formal night wear before, but we've only briefly covered the topic. We are getting ready for another Royal Caribbean cruise. So we thought we'd take some time to review Royal Caribbean's dress code, and get you the scoop on the dress code in the process. As a side note, Royal Caribbean appears to be in the process of changing the name of Formal Nights to Wear you best night. Interesting. Let's see if they make any other dress code changes in the future. What to wear on a cruise formal night is sometimes a topic of concern for some, and we want to make sure everyone feels comfortable wearing what they want when they cruise. Our review of Royal Caribbean's dress policy reveals that no one really wants to tell you what you have to wear on a cruise ship. Rather Royal Caribbean wants to provide some sensible guidelines on what to wear on a cruise ship. Likewise, this video is really only for people truly looking looking for guidance. The rules we refer to come directly from Royal Caribbean's website (at the time of this video). We are pretty comfortable saying that in general you can apply these rules to most popular cruise lines. We cover what to wear on a cruise men, women and children, and we give special attention to cruise formal night wear. Of course, if you'd rather not sit through the video, you can find the Royal Caribbean dress code for dining room on the Royal Caribbean website.

For my husband who is a very blue collar type and is not comfortable in anything resembling office attire, this is his dress policy that has never been kicked out of a MDR or specialty dining venue (except likely on a cruise line like Cunard)
Casual: Logo tees and jeans. Just make sure they're clean and free of holes or offensive sayings.
Smart Casual: Plain tees or polo and "dress jeans". Dress jeans are his black jeans that dont look like jeans in the least. He has pulled out the formal night pants for a better specialty restaurant but I dont count on it here.
Formal night: Interview outfit or date night outfit. Collared, button down shirt and dockers pants. No jacket, but he's considered one a few times but packing space is just not permitting the jacket to tag along. However, his shoe selection is a clean pair of sneakers or work boots. He just refuses to wear dress shoes for anything but his own wedding so for the sake of peace, I let him. The shoe police have yet to get him.

Now for me, I'm an office jockey, but my office is definitely more casual than most offices. So this is my dress code.
Casual: Blouse with yoga pants. I do try to stay away from the logo tees in order to dress up hub. But a floral blouse and some black yoga pants have never let me down.
Smart Casual: Honestly, I can usually stick with the casual look here but sometimes I'll break out a sundress. No heels yet though. Part of my goal is to dress up hub's look so if he is in a plain tee and the dress jeans, I'm going to put on a dress to give the illusion that we're dressier than we really are.
Formal night: Yep I'm breaking out the cocktail dress. I'm going full on adult prom here. Heels are now in play. This is what I consider wedding attire. But again the goal is to dress up hub's lack of jacket or dress shoes

This pairing of looks have never gotten us refused service in the MDR or any specialty restaurant or have gotten us any accusatory glances by disapproving other passengers. Now, on a line like Cunard, this probably would be under dressed, and might be refused service. But on lines like Royal, its never let us down.

My last cruise (which was my first) I looked around the main dinning room and saw Hawaiian shirts, cargo shorts and tank tops with tennis shoes for dinner.

I said the heck with it and wore dress shorts, docksides, with a tucked in collared shirt and looked better than most.

I love formal nights. Some are in tuxes and long evening gowns. Others in their best dress clothes. I usually do a modest LBD and gold earrings. My mother wears a black dress pants suit. It is fun for me.

We enjoy dressing up and I always make an effort to spruce up a bit even on non-formal nights. That said, I usually do your trick Sheri, and re-wear the outfit on a port day or later in the cruise at a different restaurant. My teen boys think they look pretty cool on formal nights wearing a bow tie!!

Was on Anthem of the Seas 2 weeks ago. For formal or "wear your best" night, we always dress up. That is something we looked forward to. Now, at lot of people are looking downright shabby on formal night. The dining room staff allowed people wearing shorts and other questionable attire in. What dress code? It really took the fun out of that evening. Going forward, we will still dress up-black suits and cocktail dresses.

I recently learned that camouflage attire is prohibited in many Caribbean islands, where camo is reserved for those in the military. If your caught wearing it officials can detain you.

People used to dress very formal until about 10 years ago. Now, only a few people really dress up. Now it’s more semi formal. I guess it depends on your mood or if there is a special celebration.

I have sailed on both royal & carnival ... on formal nights I just wear a nice dress & heels (church attire) & other nights I wear casual dresses or shorts & nice blouse & never had an issue ... you are on vacation... I think as long as you are clean & aren’t wearing a bathing suit or something with offensive sayings you will be fine ... going on my 8th cruise 🚢 in February... happy cruising

For smart casual I’ve always have worn nice pair of Nautica cargo shorts (light khaki, dark khaki and blue) nice collard short sleeve shirt and casual shoes. Never had a problem. For formal night I’ve worn a pair of super dark lucky blue jeans, nice collard shirt (untucked) and blazer and dress boots or shoes. Never had a problem.

Going on our first RCCL. We normally do Carnival. Do you have a video on what Mr.Cruisetipstv packs for his Royal cruise?

It kinda dulls the mood when I see cargo shorts, t shirts and baseball hats worn in the MDR. Personally, I think if you're not willing to put effort in to looking nice for dinner, head to the Windjammer. 🤷‍♀️ I love dressing up for dinner on the cruise!

I wish you would have added some pictures of your family dressed in your usual formal Wear and perhaps other pictures of what else is acceptable. I'm a visual person so to get an idea of the usual clothing style look would be helpful.
