Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Workshop Hardware Storage!

preview_player
Показать описание
Adam revamps the hardware storage system for his workshop by building a new custom wall of storage bins! Nuts, bolts, and all manner of hardware now live in this new sorter system that rolls perfectly into its new home in the cave. Happy sorting!

(Note: Adam used six locking versions of these casters, which spreads the weight better than just four.)

I’m in my shop machining a new picking tool while listening to this... I can’t shake the feeling we’re working with each other, but getting in each other’s way. 😋🤷🏻‍♂️

Your sorting is exactly how we have our bins where I work in Aviation. A couple pointers I would add:

1) we have mounted an example item on the front edge of where you have the plywood strip. This signifies what’s in the compartment for easy identification, especially items not at eye height, empty boxes for restocking, or if you remove the compartment for the workbench and then return it. This helps a lot when searching for a piece of hardware that visual is a better fit to a problem. Also this helps a lot where you have a bunch of miscellaneous items, say a compartment of roll pins, beside a compartment of hitch pins.

2) often helpful to place the label from the packaging to the back wall of the compartment for proper identification when re ordering stock.

3) the tilt you gave the compartments will be a headache when rolling the stand over any transitions. The hardware will vibrate out the front. A slight tilt in the other direction (aft down) would keep all hardware in compartments and also allows more to fit in the bins. Tilted down in the front is great on a bench or wall, but in motion no so much.

Beautiful build.

Everytime Adam picks up a power tool, an OSHA manual bursts into flames

When I see his shop I’m not envious of the tools. I’m envious that he always has whatever it is he needs and never makes three trips to the store.

One small improvement: colored labels. Gives a nice visual separation for different parts and and easy way to know if something is back in the wrong place. Other than that insanely jealous.

Watching Adam build stuff is giving off the same vibe as watching Bob Ross paint. Super relaxing and educational.

These "shop infrastructure" builds are my favorite! There's something about these videos that are so satisfying, just making a shop even easier to use.

I love how at around 13 minutes the video was like a nature documentary.. the cameraman can see how the subject "struggles" but doesn't intervene XD

For shop organization videos like this, I would really like to see a follow up video a few years later, to see how it worked out, and maybe what Adam would do differently if he were to make this again today.

Best part of this was seeing Adams mum come and chat whilst he's crafting

I love the technique of using your bare hands to block the sparks from hitting the pristine welders jacket.

52 years and still a great role model to many, and still bringing smiles along even after mythbusters ended. A true legend.

Me, 15 year ago: “I swear I could watch Adam Savage build anything.”

Me, now: “...No regrets.”

When I worked at Caterpillar, I learned that they had done the research and found that split washers didn't do any good, and actually made some joints loosen QUICKER than with no washer. They had purged them from their parts catalogs. Save your space and money, and don't use them, unless you're working on a restoration or duplication of a machine that had them originally.

I work in a manufacturing plant, and for our bolt bins we use Lista cabinets with Schaller corporation bin cups. Adam would absolutely love it. I’m slowly creating my own version in a snap on box I have. It makes retrieving exactly what you want so quick, and you can fit so much in a small footprint.

Adam: *puts on welding jacket*
Me: "good! He's demonstrating good safety practices"
Adam: *proceeds to weld without gloves*
Me: 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

20:40 Adam - "With the heaviest bolts way up on top because those are the ones that get the least amount of use..."
Me - "That's just an easy way to drop them on your head while moving the shelf."

Watching this makes me appreciate my local hardware store even more. What a concept. Nice chaps helping you find just the right hardware. Decent lunch spots along the way. A good excuse to venture out from the man cave for that rare breath of fresh air and a bit of sunshine.

Cool rig! Thougt it was funny that during a project of replacing 1 giant hardware fixture with another one, Adam still had to buy a box of screws for the project. And he whacked split-washers! Hooray!
