We’re starting a battle between honey and maple syrup! Which is better for diabetics? Should you try either at all?

1) Bees aren’t just essential for keeping our world pollinated – they’re also the source of all that delicious honey.

2) 1 tablespoon of honey has about 64 calories, 11 mg of potassium, and 17 grams of total carbohydrate, all in form of sugar. It also has trace amounts of vitamins and minerals.

3) Honey does have a relatively low Glycemic Load of 10, and a Glycemic Index of just 58.

4) Honey doesn’t have an expiration date. Archaeologists have found jars of honey dating back to the days of Ancient Egypt, and it’s still edible!

5) 1 tablespoon of maple syrup contains 52 calories. It also has 42 mg of potassium, 2.4 mg of sodium, and 13 grams of total carbohydrates.

6) Once opened, pure maple syrup lasts for about a year. After that, it may begin to grow mold.

7) Maple syrup has a Glycemic Load of 10, which is equivalent to honey. Its Glycemic Index is 54, which is slightly lower than honey.

8) Maple syrup is vegan! After all, it comes directly from maple trees.
Plus, the process of tapping does not harm the tree.

*My daughter drinks lots of water and urinates with the same rate, there are no other symptoms to show if those have anything to do with diabetes. This is a good information that I have gone through **Diabets.Care** She is 2 years 9 months, hale and healthy, have not done any blood test. But I am not certain if one can get diabetes at such a tender age. Please I will like to know more on that*

I was diagnosed as being borderline diabetic in March of this year. At this point, I don't require medication but was instructed, by my doctor, to reduce my carb intake. This channel has been very helpful by providing important information and suggesting food substitutes, such as riced cauliflower instead of pasta. I have dutifully avoided refined sugar products, but I do add honey, once a day, to my plain Greek yogurt. After watching this video, I breathed a sigh of relief. After reading the comments, my concerns have returned. It appears that I need to discuss this matter with my doctor.

But advice. Honey and maple syrup may be ok as treat once or twice a year only.

Neither one of these is good for a diabetic except in super small quantities. I'm type 2 and it doesn't take much honey or maple syrup to spike my blood. I can get away with a drop or two in a single cup of tea. That's about it!

The idea that either of these is suitable for diabetics is ludicrous

If you have diabetes you should be on the Ketogenic diet and not killing yourself eating sugars!

Raw honey is too expensive and I can't see why? Surely it should be cheaper as it's not refined? Or are we being ripped off again?

He did say use in moderation. Not to use excessively. I use raw honey once in a while whenever I have some tea, 1/2 - 3/4 teaspoon. There are diabetics that consume more sugar by eating high carb foods. My daily intake of carbs is 20 - 25 g.

Real maple syrup is typically around 74 to 76% total solids, (mostly sugars). Honey is typically thicker and is around 80 to 82% total solids. This affects the total carbohydrates by volume. Honey’s higher sugar content preserves it and inhibits bacterial growth for many years.
The main difference between raw honey and “processed“ honey is that raw honey is not filtered or pasteurized.
There is very little difference between natural honey and high fructose corn syrup.

A diabetic that controls his weight and his daily diet can have a treat such as enough pure honey from a well sourced honeybee keeper for a cup of tea or a teaspoon drizzled over oatmeal is fine. The same with Maple syrup. I know because I cook for my hubby after going thru a six weeks program at our local hospital. He lost 17 lbs, went from Metformin twice a day to once a day. He takes a daily walk twice a day besides his usual chores as a retiree. I suggest a more common sense diet with portion control, low carbs and hit the veggies heavily, skip the sauces, gravies and additives. Natural sugar such as stevia, not Splenda. Portion control and common sense and treats can be had.

Without first watching this video, I would say Honey is the best of the two.
OK watched the video and you say Maple Syrup is better. Cool. thanks allot. I do like Maple Syrup and have used it on Pancakes which is another sugar problem food.
Anyway, thanks for these food learning videos.

Both of them should be avoided, you can replace it with dates, my opinion.

He is correct about the health benefits...for a fairly healthy human being without diabetes.... maybe this video is inappropriate for diabetic patients 🙈

How can you even make a video about ALL you need to know about honey and not mention it’s high fructose content and that although fructose is lower GI, it can only be processed by the liver and all the negatives that come with that.

Who writes this programs content? As a specialist practitioner in diabetes and obesity in the UK I have to say the information is out of date and downright ridiculous

These days nothing is off limits as long as you treat with insulin soon after and test before dosing.
Common sense really personally I don't really like sweet stuff.
