Bitlocker is complete bs. I've had my fair share of Bitlocker nightmares in my professional life, ain't no way I'm going through the nightmares again in my private life too.

Bitlocker being enabled by default is going to really mess up a lot of people who aren't tech-savvy (not the people watching this video.) The worst part is most folks are just going to click through the installation process without paying attention; then when something happens and they find themselves locked out of their computer, they won't have a clue what to do.

Encryption key? WTF is that, they'll say, and they are in great danger of losing all their data. Sure, a copy is supposed to be kept on MS's cloud servers, but will they know how to access it? Will they have printed out a copy to keep? Probably not, and if they even saved a copy onto a file on their computer- well, that's like locking your spare car key in the glovebox of your car.

My solution: since I haven't found anything "better" in Win 11 but lots of things I don't want or like, I've edited my registry so that Win 11 can't be installed. If M$ actually improves 11 so that I'm in control of my computer instead of them, then I'll reconsider; but for a long time now M$ has been power-mad, so that's unlikely. I'm sticking with Win 10 for as long as I can!

Bitlocker is now like a ransomware created my microsoft itself, it'll make more people to log in or make a microsoft account, otherwise they'll lose the data if the OS cannot be accessible...i mean, it's like "hey, i encrypted your volume/drive for your security (no one asked for), if you want the recovery key you MUST use a Microsoft account to retrieve your key"...well, at least there are still ways to avoid automatic encryption.

So, can't use your computer if it's a problem with the system drive (most non technical people).
Recovery key available on your MS account, which you can't access because the computer doesn't work

Well planned MS, well planned.👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋

My current install of Win11, I had installed already few months back with disabled bitlocker via Rufus modification, won't the 24h2 update enable it again (on top of it trying to enable it by default to begin with)?

I’m curious though, since the key is from your Microsoft account, what happens if you never signed in and used the tricks to bypass logging in?

You can disable this via group policy or administrative templates if you aren’t on a domain

I had Bitlocker disabled in Windows 11 23h2 and it stayed disabled after the upgrade to 24h2. So it appears the auto enable may well be on fresh installs only

Bitlocker only helps secure your data if the hardware is stolen, being connected to the internet and infected with malware/RAT it will use the system normally allowing someone to download your data and it should be decrypted. On Linux in order to access a partition it has to be unlocked via password and its not initially mounted upon boot. I haven't played much with Bitlocker since it was first introduced years back, so i dunno what has been improved

Won't it make a new recovery key when you turn BitLocker back on? In that case, surely it wouldn't actually be a security risk to show the recovery key of the drive you are disabling it on, right?

How I am even supposed to turn it off if it’s not even a setting I have?

Do they give you a password for it? What if I need to place it in another PC?

Is bitlocker like Apple’s apfs file system?

So basically if you don't want bitlocker, just allow windows to do it's thing and then if bitlocker gets turned on, just get the key from your MS account and then use it to turn off bitlocker and decrypt any data that has been encrypted..

I assume windows will only automatically turn on bitlocker on the OS drive and it will leave mapped network drives alone, USB drives alone and extra SATA or m.2 drives alone.

Is this encryption going to only happen on new computers that come with that version of 11 or will it be enabled on existing devices when they update?
