I agree with you about this. They may be doing this as their "Secure by Default" initiative but in the home users' case it's not necessary because most of them are not endangered of their device being stolen unless they travel a lot.

This is stupid. I don't want Bitlocker.

Guess Microsoft want people to stop using Windows. Hope OS gives a option to disable it.

Tipping point for people looking for alternatives

It's bad enough that they force TDM and secure boot by default, And now this ? All i can say is, Take a screen shot on your phone to note your password or make a txt file and make and put it on a usb stick aswell, So you wont loose it and can view it on other devices.

Considering that just 6 months ago videos about how Bit locker slows SSD's down by 40% were every where you'd think Turning it on by default would be a bad idea.

Thank you very much for this in-depth update. Much appreciated.

Wow what is going on at Microsoft?! There seems to be no end of insane ideas. I can’t and won’t update past Windows 10 so I’m genuinely unsure what I’m going to do in the next few years

So how do people get on if they want to take there 2nd or 3rd drive out and put it into an other computer ? is all that data looked to the other windows install? if that's the case if the OS drive fails can you still get your files back on a second drive?

All I see is a massive disaster, And a bunch of people losing all their data. I have downloaded a 23H2 ISO to use as a clean reinstall one day, Supposedly if I use this and then update, Bit locker will stay off.

Does Microsoft own the PC? Why encrypt it by default? It's to the owner whether they want their doors and Windows locked.

my experience w bitlocker was aweful - my exact password stopped working on Win 10 and 11 then what? wasnt able to recover anything so i wiped the drive.

Damn, why exactly do we need as much "security"? Sort of glad im still on 22H2 (Win10). Kind of still want to move over to newer versions but seeing what they do and require im really not sure i want to go with that. I guess im staying on Win 10 for now. Wonder whats gonna happen to Win 10 when official support ends. Seeing what they do recently i wouldnt be surprised if they came up with some way to screw Win 10 to try and force people to move to Win 11.

So if you update it from Windows Update it shouldn't encrypt. Also, I only use a Local Account, so that should also stop this thing from happening.

Bad idea for home users who have no idea what the hell it is anyway.

Serious Question for BrenTech:
If MS does encrypt these hard drives with Bit Locker and they posses the key won't this be a PERMANENT FORM OF RECALL, which they can use, without your knowledge or approval.
Also, If you have an external hard drive which copies your hard drive, why would even need to have encryption, especially if you never use one drive, the cloud, recall, co=pilot or any form of AI?
Yeah I know its done for safety reasons but if MS has it in their procession, there is nothing keeping them from using it under certain conditions, even with out your approval.

PLEASE RESPOND as I am very interested in your take on this.

So relieved to see that my device is not compatible with Bitlocker.

omg, i thought that only the C drive gets encrypted, what about external drives you hoockup from time to time
i have a lot of sample libraries, will they also be encripted when i plug them in?
then, when these drives get corrupted, they will have another lawsuit on their hands because of the moneys worth thats on these drives

So, when this update rolls out will it enable bit-locker on a windows update?
Will it enable on an already existing win 11 install or is IT ONLY encrypted on fresh new installs?

Strongly considering Linux at this point....
