I can't believe after so many years NONE of the developers thought, hey this would actually be useful to just drag layers to have them be their own new layer and keep their name.

why does this not work for me in 2020 illustrator...it seperates but i cannot drag the layers out of layer 1

> Select the layer that has the objects
> click on the drop down menu on the corner of the layers panel
> select "Release to Layers (build").
>select the newly created sub-layers and move them out of the original layer.

Thanks for help. Adobe really tried hard to hide this. Users expect to - "Spread to layers" on right mouse click, but it was never intended to work this way :)

BUT do you know if there is a way to use Illustrator's “Release to Layers” and actually keep the group names that already existed so that each new layer set retains that group name??
