I've been in this hobby for 20 years, and I agree with everything you said with just one comment regarding something you said. The egg crates under the sand was never to "secure the rock" it was to protect the bottom glass from falling rocks. See we used to make massive rock walls covering the entire back of the tank following the 1 lb per gallon rule. Thankfully, those are outdated, I just wanted to clarify using my experience and what I learned from my old timers.

Garlic definitely is an attractant to add to food. It works great for fishing. It's not exactly something that makes the fish eat. If they're stressed you could put the best food in front of their face and they won't eat. I bet having ick would be the same. I also bet if you put garlic on some of your fish food the other healthy fish will go to town on it.

1 pound per gallon was what we were saying back in the 90s when we were using live rock pulled out of the ocean. Controversial even back then, and not sustainable. It did allow for a lot of hiding places for fish, something a lot of modern aquascapes unfortunately seem to ignore. I never saw anyone use egg crate on the bottom of their tank. And garlic.. all I can say is "LOL".

I did the egg crate :D, it's mainly recommended to spread the weight of rock - works perfectly in freshwater so i thought it'd be no problem in reef... oh how wrong i was!
trying lift the rock when ya can't remember which parts you glued together to remove the egg crate was scary :D

The egg crate helps distribute the weight of the rock more evenly, but it shouldn't cover the entire bottom... Just use it under the rocks directly on the bottom to prevent points from breaking the glass.

LOl I bought 500lbs of live rock direct from Fiji for my 145 gallon in 2003. It is very tight, however, the reef wall look was very popular. I only had about 6 inches from rock to front panel of glass.

I have to say I started keeping reefs in 1996 and I also did the rock to water ratio. Even back then egg crate was suggested..lol

Hey why did you show my picture in the early ERA of reefing. LOL. Jk not me but I was reefing back then. That rule was when live rock was readily available and back then there was no other filtration really. The rock was your filtration. Things sure have changed with the filtration methods available today. What's the pump in the right side of the tank for? UV?? Would like to see a tank update.

Ive been in the aquarium trade for 35 years and have never heard the one pound per one gallon. Garlic is used cause parasites dont like it, kinda like to help repell them its not a cure lol

Here’s another one: sand. The only purpose for sand is for aesthetics. Sand does not help with bacteria or anything. I’m fact it will trap nutrients and could cause tank crashes. I’m not saying you shouldn’t use sand. I’m just saying that the people should only use sand knowing that it does much more harm than good, but that’s okay if you really like the look of it. I highly recommend using starboard. It has the same effect as sand with the bright white bottom, and it is a great alternative to a plain bare bottom. It will also protect the bottom of the tank

The eggcrate isnt to keep it from moving it is to evenly disperse the weight. If you have a rock structure over 100 lbs sitting on a few points against the glass there is a chance of chipping and cracking your bottom glass. I 100% use it

eggcrate will help protect the bottom glass if any chance your live rock tumble over and cracking the glass, i use them in with my moray eel tank setup or 40lbs rock in your tank
