5 Worst Octopuses To Keep As Pets

Some octopuses make great pets and adapt really well to tank life, while others should just be left in the wild. Sometimes size is an issue, some are deadly and some just don't adapt well to aquarium life.

Honestly wouldn't want any octopus for a pet. They are bright, solitary and inquisitive. They are escape artists. You really have to know what your doing to keep them healthy and sane. Anyone keeping the blue ringed octopus is a Darwin Award in waiting.

As a child I often searched for crabs in rock-pools, and I only once encountered a blue-ring. They are surprisingly small, and when I overturned the rock it was hiding under it went from nondescript to bright neon blue rings that are truly startling to see. Video just can't show how bright those blue rings glow when we see them up close. Needless to say, I gently turned the rock to it's original position and went looking for less dangerous animals to play with!.

I wish I had the energy to keep an octo as a pet. They are so glorious. But I know that I wouldn't be a great owner so I appreciate from a distance.

The only Octopus I have is a Plush Octopus and a few Tentacle Plushies for my Doll and Figure collection.
These other Octopuses you speak of are living breathing animals and should only be kept as pets if you are responsible to look after one. Much respect for those who do their research before getting involved in a wild marine animal.
For me, I rather my toys and figures as well as tentacle Octopus plushies.

My family had a coral reef fish tank in our basement where we had a bar and video game setup. We had a soda bar and Nintendo PlayStation gaming area in our basement. We had an octopus that turned blue a lot because the lights behind the bar was blue. I thought it was blue for awhile but I found out it wasn't blue it was just thin and the light slightly showed through it's legs once in awhile. He was a tiny octopus and he loved hanging out with us. We gave him toys to play with and my mom built him puzzles to play with. My mom was very smart and knew a lot about animals. She taught me how to care for all types of animals. We don't buy animals from stores, stores don't care for the animals and they don't make sure they are healthy and strong. It's animal cruelty to have animals in a store. Adopt them from breeders who have experience and license. Breeders also will give you extra stuff to help you care for the animals.

Great info. I have no plans to keep any octopuses, instead I will just live vicariously through your videos and leave it to you. I know my own limits, and just because I've watched some videos on the internet, that in no way makes me an expert.

I saw a blue ringed octopus listed for sale on a pet store's website, and I was thinking "how is that even legal?" I'm still thinking that. At the very least you should have to have some sort of special (very special) permit to own something like that, and maybe be registered with your local law enforcement agency, in case anyone in your area happens to drop dead of B.R.O. venom.
