What is your favorite experience of not learning for your Mistakes in D&D??

This is genius. The sphere of annihilation has only 5 uses per day so the BBEG hired a party of 5 morons to enter the dungeon, disable all the traps, defeat all the enemies guarding it, and finally kill themselves so that they can freely walk in and take it for themself. Now the BBEG has the power to annihilate any 5 people they want per day and it cost them nothing.

Small hint, if you try to open a book that looks clearly evil, first of all; Dont. if you get a warning after every of the 4 locks; DONT!(We nuked an island)

The sphere sliced our friend in half, face first. The front half was just... gone. None of us saw it coming. One second he's fine and the next he's sheared in a dark crevice

My dm gave us the deck of many things. My friend drew the instant death card, I drew the alter reality card and made it to where he never drew instant death, and then he draws it again. I should have altered reality to where we never found the deck. my bad for thinking he would learn his lesson lmaooo

My uncle (as a rogue) once walked up to a group of figures wearing dark robes, stood inside a pentagram chanting in a dark language. As any curious rogue would do he then tried to ask them what they were doing, when they failed to answer he tugged on their robes. He then had to make a save vs instant death. He succeeded. This happened FIVE TIMES before the party physically dragged him away

This is making me think of the gaping maw from the Tomb of horrors which deletes anything that's stuck into it, rogue sticks arm in there feels nothing, then pulls their arm out only to find out that it's gone, or the barbarian sticks their head in and their body goes limp as they instantly die.

They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Now who wants to say that BBEG is the insane one?

The barbarian part is literally me and my friend! We went into a a room with a chest on a sort of pedestal in the middle of it and I told her not to touch it because it might be a mimic and she immediately goes, "I want to touch the chest." 🤦

This reminds me of a true event that happened a few years ago. I work in a grocery warehouse, in the freezer section which is kept at -10. A load of totes with lids had just been brought up from the back. Suddenly a co-worker goes running into the freezer and tells me not to open the lid until he was sure it was dead. To this day I have no idea what was in there

Here’s the real way around similar problems (but not this exact problem i.e. sphere of annihilation): mage hand + a canvas sac propped open by a stick. Pick it up with the hand and place it in the sac.

Too heavy for mage hand? Have a long rest and memorize catapult. Yeet the cursed object into the stick, which will close the bag around it, thus dealing with the curse.

Our DM allowed this behavior when we were hired to bring back a cursed object that killed all that touched it.

"Clearly only I am worthy to wear the Helm of Annihilation."

* I faceplant my entire head into the sphere, much like a duck stealing food from a cat.

my story: the Paladin annoyed the Warlock long enough to lead to his betrayal. now I am the new Warlock. he annoyed me to the point I lead an army of around 40 Goblins, a living fortress, a Goblin Wizard and two CR 1 to CR12 Demons (determined by a D12) against him. not even the DM expected this to happen twice.

In the old school Tomb of Horrors there is a dark whole in the wall that holds a sphere of annihilation. First thing one of my players says.. "i jump inside it.." I was like Wahht.. Your dead.. gone.

"Are you sure this is the Sphere of Annihilation? It more looks like an Orb of Fire or something to me..."

I once had a paladin of St. Cuthbert that wielded a nonmagical maul back in 3.5.
I had him attack (Power Attack + Holy Smite) what was described to me as a dark orb, not a lightless hole in reality. I thought it was an evil artifact made of obsidian or something. When I hit it I was required to make a saving throw; I failed the save. My paladin was erased from existence.
My maul fell to the floor, undamaged.

Perfect time for a DIVINATION Wizard to use both Portent dice...lowest to king and highest to wizard's roll. BOOM! Divination school Wizard for the win

I have a bad habit, whenever the DM says "are you sure?" I take it as a challenge
