"You just get to watch a college class without tuition" made me so sad... Here in France it's... Normal... It's called "Free attending students" they don't pass exams, they don't get a diploma in the end, but they can attend as much classes as they wish. They just need the professor authorization, and they almost never denie it. Many middle aged and elderly people attend classes that way for the sole purpose of learning down here.

Universities and colleges have always offered free class auditing so you can learn without attending. It's just now offered inline for self pace studying
