The PS2 was never intended to be a “high end” consumer electronics product. It was always intended to be a consumer friendly mass market product intended to broaden the appeal of gaming and get relatively inexpensive DVD players into people’s homes. For a lot of people (myself included) the PS2 was their first DVD player. The PS2 was priced competitively out of the gate at $299 and Sony was aggressive in cutting the price despite the fact that it was selling very well. Companies usually cut prices when sales are sluggish, but Sony had the PS2 down to $199 in the second year (if I remember correctly). I think mine was $199 and may have even come with Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec as a pack-in (it’s hard to remember. I know GT 3 was one of the first games I got; whether I bought it separately, I can’t recall).
Anyway, Nintendo has never officially cut the price of any model switch in 7 years on the market. They even raised the price for the OLED and special editions. The only time they offer anything is when they include a game for Black Friday.
And yes, I know, inflation is a thing, but even taking inflation into account, it wasn’t until playstation 3 that Sony shifted to a higher end, more adult market. That’s why they switched to cinematic, narrative games from their major studios, rather than cartoony, kid friendly, mascot games like Ratchet, Jak, and Sly Cooper.
The original fat PS3 was sold at a $200 loss, in large part because Sony wanted to get blu ray players into homes as they were a blu ray format partner. Even then, the ps3 was TWiCE as expensive as the first PS2s.
That was a long way of saying the PS2 and Switch absolutely were geared towards a younger more casual audience. They were mass market products.
Anything else is revisionist history (probably from people who weren’t born when the PS2 came out).
I don’t know what’s going on, but we’re only 2 months into 2024, and people are already acting nutty. Between this and the Xbox fanbros, social media has been stranger than usual.
If and when Switch passes the PS2, I anticipate weirdos coming out to say that “technically, switch gets all the console market and handheld market combined and therefore can’t be fairly compared to PS2. A fair comparison would be to combine the sales of PS2 and PSP….then compare that number to the switch’s lifetime sales.”
Mark my words, people WILL try anything to keep Nintendo from being the best selling system ever. Forget goal posts. Some of these people will move to a new stadium.

Nintendo is the master of handheld. They have the best selling handhelds number 1 2 3 5 6 and 7. Every time people talk about the Wii U era they forget that the 3DS was a success. Pokemon is the largest multimedia franchise of the world. There are people who only buy handhelds for Pokemon

I like both my Switch and PS5. I know, revolutionary concept to console loyalists. I’m not a shareholder of either and both are successful enough in sales for me as a consumer. I mainly do exclusives on console and use my tv connected PC and Steam Deck for third party stuff. I’m saying this as a former console warrior / fanboy, it’s a lot more fun to not put all your energy in hating another corporation or piece of plastic that just wants your money.

It remains to be seen whether or not the next Switch will be backward compatible, but I think it makes sense that it would be.

WiiU selling poorly + Switch selling well = Great market for WiiU ports/remakes on Switch
Switch selling well and being a massive success ≠ Great market for Switch ports/remakes on Switch2

The failure of the WiiU paved the way for ports and remakes to sell as good as they did on Switch. The opportunity to sell huge numbers of remakes/ports for the Switch2 has evaporated because of the success of the original Switch in my opinion.

Funny how back in the days of Switch launching a lot of people said Switch will fail because of how the Wii U failed and how it's a home console and they never talked about how successful Nintendo is in the handheld realm, but now all of a sudden Switch is just a handheld and it shouldn't be taken seriously in the home console space. These people will not move the goalpost they will move to different stadium.Also power wise PS 5 and Xbox Series are mid tier PCs so they aren't technically high end machines.

I enjoy my Playstation 5 significantly more than xbox but I use my switch FAR more often than any of my other systems... if we are being honest.

This switch 2 needs to deliver on everything in order to get 140 million console sales Player. More power, Better performance, enhanced backwards compatibility, Better eshop, Better online service. And affordable. This switch 2 also needs to be a hybrid console.

As good as the switch sold....if this next system has backwards dont see games selling no where near as well. Which may end up hurting the future longevity of the next system. I mean i got well over 300 physical games and atleast another 150 digital. I have played....a fraction of those.
