Step-By-Step Bumper Repair and Touchup Paint Blending

Blending touchup paint so it disappears on your vehicle’s flat surfaces are fairly simple, but what about the compound curves found around bumpers, rooflines and other openings on your vehicle? In this video, we will show you with a little patience and some simple tools from Automotive Touchup how you can easily blend touchup paint repairs so they blend perfectly with the surrounding factory paint for a professional looking job. Scuffs are common on any bumper. Here we show how to spot repair a scuffed bumper using this Porsche Cayenne and our premium quality aerosol spray paint as an example.

Hey I buy paint from these guys. Excellent quality and color match! One suggestion, if you are blending a light metallic, use a clear blender coat otherwise you get a halo.

Unfortunately you may have to start over. It is often easier to start over than try to save a painted tape line. Start with 1000-1500. 1000 might be too rough, 1500 may be too slow. I'd start on the rougher side and work my way to 1200 and 1500. Wrap sandpaper around something hard like a paint stick. It is highly likely you will burn through to the primer on the lower side before getting everything level enough to pass. Be prepared to start over before sanding and polishing out a tape line.

It depends on which area. The basecoat blend area gets roughly 600, the clearcoat blend area gets anywhere from 1000 to 1500. The edge of the clearcoat blend area should be 1500 so I may polish out any scratches I didn't cover with new clear.

Roids10, if the primer is rough you can start with 320 or 400 to knock down the rough areas, but you do not want any 320-400 wet sand scratches left when it is time to use basecoat.

I am spraying basecoat color over the primer, and a little further out into the sanded area.

When you first sanded the damaged area as you put it, what grit sand paper was that? Also, is it better to wet sand the primer with 320 grit first as then finish with 600 grit?

It is really hard to tell the best way for a repair. Sometimes the scuff will come out with rubbing compound if its light enough. If not I'd repaint the 1 foot area instead of each individual scuff. You may spray primer over existing sanded paint.

Usually not. If the old clear looks white, or has chipped edges you will still see it. I've done it before once. While it may look a little better, it won't look professorial.

Hi, I have bumper that has multiple scuff marks in about a 1 ft area. I do not have a power sander, so I was hoping that I would be able to sand/ feather each scuff mark, and sand the painted areas inbetween. Then I could just primer the whole area. Am I able to spray primer over sanded paint, however?

if my area in the bumper it shoes the bare plastic black, do i spray a 2 coats of promoter and after can i just spray the basecoat on top of the promoter? do i really need to use primer on top of the promoter? the area of bareplastic is small 2 inch by 2 inch

Spray on your paint. Attach 1500-2000 grit wet or dry sandpaper to power sander. Keep paper slick with water/soap. When paint becomes dull colored, buff with buffing compound. Add Clear coat. Never attempt to power sand corners.

Why not ever use the 2K clear coat you sell? The hardener makes it better overall yet you consistently use your cheaper and lighter clear coat on the Lexus and Porsche. What gives?
