What is Data Governance?

Companies store tons of sensitive, regulated and mission-critical data assets. Like rare books in a library, that data needs to be carefully organized, protected and used. That’s why organizations need data governance — to ensure the availability, usability, quality and security of critical data.
To help, we need a librarian, called a data governance officer, who will be supported by a group of experts, like business users responsible for particular data, the compliance department, and IT pros. Together, they will develop a data governance policy that defines the methods, technologies and behavior for properly managing data. For example, the policy will specify how certain types of data will be stored, archived, backed up and protected.

With proper data governance, you can:

• Minimize the risk of security breaches
• Achieve and prove compliance
• Realize the full value of your content
• Optimize operations, and
• Improve profitability
