Lenovo Y740 Thermal Testing - How Hot Is It?

preview_player
Показать описание
The Lenovo Legion Y740 17” gaming laptop performs well in games, but how hot does it get? In this testing we’ll take a detailed look at performance, see if there is any throttling caused by thermal or power limits, and find out what can be done to improve gaming performance and temperatures.

I’ll investigate undervolting, overclocking, and show you how hot the laptop gets while gaming and under combined CPU and GPU stress test with different settings, let you listen to total system fan noise, test with a cooling pad and see hot spots with a thermal camera. We’ll also see how the quiet, balanced and performance modes affect results with the latest BIOS update.

This channel is underrated, but thank you man for doing what you do. The only reviewer I like on YT.

I seriously feel your channel is under-rated. It is really straight to the point with no bull-shit at all. In addition, I like so much that you compare different brand of laptops with similiar spec. I think it is really important nowadays as even though they have similiar specs, different calibrations from manufacturers will have huge differences.

I was really looking forward to a 17 inch review.... Thanks for this....

The 15 inch with the 2060 seems to actually run much cooler than this according to many reviews
I honestly expected much more better thermals from this thing which is pretty odd

I lowered my cpu temps in idle / load by about ~15-20c by undervolting the cpu core (-200mv) and cpu cache (-100mv). I was getting load temps peaking at 98c. I now peak at 79c. Huge improvement. I used a very simple tool called ThrottleStop. **Use at your own risk tho!**. I might also add that my performance increased overall since it stopped my cpu from constantly throttling. I have absolutely no idea why lenovo would overvolt their cpus like this from the get go.

Great vid man, thinking about getting this machine. I was worried about the issues with temp. but you just made them go away with your UV scores. Thank you for that!

i have the old bios and max fans help with cooling on a 15 inch 2070mxq version , cpu around 78 to 80 and gpu around 70 in wolfenstein youngblood at 1080 144 fps

It's still a great machine and gsync makes a huge difference, people who have used gsync know that it's an amazing feature.

The raider is expensive and if someone can find this 400 to 500 dollars cheaper I think they should save the money

I got my Y740 RTX 2070 Max-Q for $1600. They had a discount going on. I absolutely love it as an architecture student.

hey Jarrod, I undervolted my 15 inch y740 (i7 8750H) to -0.12V, and I used a cheap cooling pad. my bios is probably the previous version, so I can still use ctrl+shift+1 to trigger max fans. I managed to get 2895 points in cinebench R20. I haven't tried multiple runs of R20 though

I think the 1660ti would fare far better then 2070max-q, especially when they both don't have that big a difference. Temperatures with 1660ti should be reasonable.

Hi Jarrod! a recent follower of your channel here, thanks to your amazingly detailed and effort shining videos. Do you plan to review the Acer Nitro 5 with i5 8300H and gtx 1060? I'm planning to buy it as of now, just your techie touch of a review is all I'm waiting for!

My 17 inch Y740 2080 power brick gets hot but the laptop stays cool even under heavy gaming. I love my machine

It’s great showing CPU and GPU using Watts in different mode

I think were sent a defective unit Jarrod (as in, the thermal paste application). Which you've no doubt already deducted. You're seeing CPU temps ~20 degrees higher than notebookchecks 8th gen model.

Still, impressive that it tops out at 48 decibels. This thing would likely be whisper quiet after a proper LM repaste.
Here's hoping they fix the bios too.

Quick question... Is the display bezel plastic or metal?

Really was considering either this or the y540, but after researching I’ve become really worried about temperatures. I watched the video, but is the temperature for gaming something I should worry about using it with out of the box settings? If it is something to worry about, should I look at another option for a laptop?
